Title says it all. I’ve been experiencing the problem on almost all of my wordpress sites, regardless of theme. Had the dashboard side menu disappear too.

I’ve heard a lot of people complaining about this, but no real answers from the Team.

    Thanks

  • Have you tried deactivating ALL plugins AND switching to a default bundled WordPress theme?

Most likely a plugin and or theme issue. With out debugging it’s hard to pinpoint the issue.

but no real answers from the Team.

There is no “Team”. Just lots & lots of WordPress users – some of whom contribute to WordPress in their spare, unpaid, time.

LOL. Like me (also part of the team). But if you can’t be constructive about the subject given (moderator or not), please, it’s better not to contribute to the thread. ??

    ok…..

so you haven’t answered my question about any debugging steps you have taken.

    What have you tried?

Unfortunately with sites in full production, and multiple people complaining, and related threads closed without any conclusion… I am simply fishing for a commonality.

And I have tried the standard procedures. But thanks.

I’ll sort it out on my own.

But this can be a place for other people to share, if they are suddenly experiencing a disappearing Dashboard Home content after 3.9.1 auto update.

And if I get to an answer first, I’ll post it.

What version of PHP are you running on the server??

I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to come off sounding arrogant, I’m feeling old, it’s been a long couple of days and I’ve built and manage 15 independent WP sites, mostly custom themes so this kind of thing is rather irksome after a core update.

    PHP Version 5.2.17 CGI/FastCGI

I’ll “swear” that I re-upped the files on one site and that it fixed the missing Dashboard menu problem, but I am now not certain it was the same site I am looking at now that has no Dashboard Home content except the side and top menus.

None of the site or plugins functionality “seems” to be affected, so I can still work with it until I have time to debug more thoroughly or an independent answer is sourced.

That PHP version should be OK. I’m sorry but there is no magic bullet in these situations. The steps that Evan Herman suggested are basic troubleshooting – a process of elimination deliberately designed to locate the root cause as quickly as possible by first removing the most obvious and common culprits via a series of (often) temporary steps.

Your theme & plugin settings are saved in your database and should be retained for future use.

No worries, I am looking for a magic bullet, but I’ve got troubleshooting skills…

… I’ve been programming object-oriented code since about ’77 now.

I was just assuming that since this happened to several of my independent sites at the same time, AND because I could see multiples complaining of a similar issue after the 3.9.1 auto update that there might be a common thread unfolding.

We’ll see what evolves, and I’ll report if I am able to discover the culprit. ??

Downloads of 3.9.1 must be around the 10 million mark by now (a pretty conservative guestimate) but we’ve not seen any issues of this kind reported here that have not been sorted out by one of the troubleshooting steps so far. If there had been such a bug it would now have its own Trac ticket and I’ve have given you the ticket url.

Thus far, it’s all been site specific stuff rather than any WP core issues.

Thank you. That was the response I was hoping to get the first time.

And of course it lead me to the solution.

What a boob I am. I was mixing up the two issues I had with two different sites (Missing Dashboard Menu, Missing Dashboard Home Content). And of course I followed the standard troubleshooting procedure on the FIRST (with missing menu) and NOT on the second (missing Home Content) – in part because it’s a busy production site … blah .. blah ..blah

I forgot that I was using Dashboard Commander Plugin with this particular second client, and wouldn’t you know it, the DC’s settings had reverted all permissions to “Nobody” (i.e. all Dashboard widgets off).

Problem solved. I owe you both an apology and a big thank you for helping me resolve my issue.

No problem. Glad to hear that you got this sorted. ??
