I have a client wanting to set up an on-line Gazeteer giving information about all towns in the State where I live. He wants a page for each of around 1,000 towns with a map (google maps expect), the name of the town, an image, and certain other specific info. For this project there will be a small number of contributors. I would want a static page for each Town, and a menu hierarchy using an alpha grouping (eg A – F)> Alpha (eg “B”)> Town name – three levels deep.My questions are:

    • Can I customise the back end editor to provide custom fields where editors would enter text to guide them as to what was required, rathr than just a blank screen. I would want to style each field to give consistent look to the pages. This would ensure the contributors all added similar info and ensure it had a consistent look in the front end
    • Can WordPress cope with a site having up to 1,000 pages?

I have searched plugins and nothing seems to provide for customizing fields in the back-end editor.
    Any suggestions very gratefully received.
    Thanks,

    Pete

  • to be honest it sounds more like you need a wiki application than blog. you could maybe set up a wordpress site to work as the main “what’s new” area and install a wiki on a subdirectory of your hosting account and use that for the 1000 odd pages.

Thanks. Thats what i was wondering as well. WordPress seems so easy to modify and what with all the plugins and so on, I hoped it might serve the purpose. Will check out your wiki list.
    Cheers,
