wordpress creating too many drafts

basically when i’m typing a post out, the draft will automatically save and once i’ve published it, i notice that it has saved about 60 copies of the same draft at different times with differing amount of text relating to those times, which makes my manage posts page look really messy – any way of stopping this from happening?
