• I’m sure this must have been answered tons of times but I can’t find a solution particular to my problem.

My wordpress is creating multiple images, about 10 right now which can’t be correct.

First it only created 7 images, upon which I edited the ‘settings –> media –> –> thumbnail sizes’ and put all sizes to 0 which was a solution i found online.

After this the thumbnails of my ‘featured image’ showed up square instead of rectangular.

I re-edited the ‘settings –> media –>’ back to the previous 150 x 150 and 300 x 300 size thumbnails again and now I have 11 different images for each image i upload. Im perplexed.

I have checked the functions.php of my theme and it only requires 5 different sizes. Where do the other sizes come from? See information below.

    functions.php

    Media settings

    FTP

    square featured image

  • Another sizes can be from some plugins you use, WooCommerce for example.

Oh wow, I don’t have woocommerce but I have quite a lot of different plugins. Will be hard to figure out which ones are using thumbnails.

How come my featured image is now displaying square thumbnails instead of rectangular ones. Is there a setting that I might have touched?

There is a checkpoint below the thumbnail sizes in Media setting which is about cropping images. If you don’t need it, just remove it and regenerate thumbnails. Or you can make a different size and have this option to make sure that all your images will be with the same form factor.
