Bear with me while I describe this in as much detail as I can.

I was attempting to update a page on my website (kubbcanada.com) and noticed it was very slow to load. When I finally got the admin panel up, it said there was a new version (3.8) I upgraded to 3.8 and things were still very slow. After doing all my updates (plugins, themes etc…) I still had the slowness. My wife also runs a site that is hosted on my account (different domain name) and hers is also unbearably slow to load. She has not upgraded (nothing changed in at least a month on her site other than perhaps a few posts). I contacted my hosting provider (GoDaddy) and they said it was definitely a wordpress problem. I tried accessing a file directly on my host and sure enough it was quick.

I ran the simple optimizer plugin, the P3 profiler that GoDaddy suggested and also the cache plugin. Now both my site and my admin come up intermittently. I get the blank page more than I get anything else now. But sometimes it works.

I’m at a total loss as to what could be wrong now….please help

  • Hi Vidar,

Have you tried deactivating plugins one by one to see if any of them are causing the issue? Sometimes a slow site can be caused by a plugin that sends far too many HTTP requests, ultimately slowing your site down to an unbearable speed.

That’s next on my list, but my issue right now is when I try to deactivate (or do anything once I get a page to finally load) is that it goes to the blank screen…I refresh till I’m blue in the face but nothing…

I would deactivate all your plugins by changing the plugin folder name temporarily via FTP.

Change it to plugins-deactivated or something similar. This will deactivate all plugins. You should then be able to browse around with no crashing or hang time (if one of the plugins was the culprit)

Disabled by FTP, all is back to normal after reactivaing.

    Thanks

Great! Quite an annoyance when that occurs. Glad you were able to sort the issue in a relatively quick time frame.

Have a great new year Vidar

Try and optimize each file in phpmyadmin. Sometimes that helps or just install wp-optimize plugin This is the only plugin i use to optimize my website [Link redacted]
