    Hi,

I got a Wordfence alert today telling me a lot of WordPress core files (like, 200) have been modified. One of them is wp-login.php, so I’m not sure if I dare to log in to my site (where I believe I could find more information and details about what’s changed) since I don’t know if this is malware or why so many files suddenly are modified. I’m not sure why this has happened, what it is and what to do next.

I appreciate your help, thank you so much!

Hi @everjed, thanks for your message.

To prevent you having to sign in if you feel uncomfortable doing so at the moment, could you please forward a copy of the Wordfence Alert email to wftest @ wordfence . com?

Please include your forum username in the subject line to help me find it, and reply here once you’ve sent it.

I will take a look at the information and see if we should advise cleaning your site, or there may be another explanation.

    Thanks,

    Peter.

    Hi @everjed,

I have looked at the email and it looks potentially like a broken WordPress update. You will need to sign in to your website to look at a few scan results and compare those files for the version of WP that you have installed and the previous version you had installed. The “VIEW DIFFERENCES” button will help you do that.

If it is a broken update, the “Reinstall Now” button on the WordPress > Dashboard > Updates page may fix it. If not, then this guide can help:

    Or ask for help here:

    Thanks again,

    Peter.
