• HI.

I have been using WordPress for some time now and I love to application. I would like to create a portal using WordPress. This means that I would use WP for commercial/my business use. I will put banners/ads classified and other things. And I hope to get some money for it.

In the codex says that WP is free. Does this include the above use/purpose? Can I use it to create my business portal for free? Will I be breaching copyright?

WordPress is free in that the software is licensed using the GPL which covers the distribution of the software.

You can do anything you like with it including using it as a business portal.

If you make changes to the WordPress source and distribute the changed software without sharing or making publicly available your changes, then you’d be violating the license.

And one more caveat, refrain from using a domain with the word “wordpress” in it. Other than that, go for it.
