WordPress Comment Pagination Core Issue

  • I have enabled comment pagination functionality in WordPress settings. I am having the following settings for showing comments in WordPress Discussion settings.

    Break comments into pages with 25 top level comments per page and the LAST page displayed by default.
    Comments should be displayed with the OLDER comments at the top of each page

    But the post is showing only last few comments instead of last (new) 25 comments on post load.

    E.g On the URL I provided in website URL section of this comment, I have 27 comments for this post. So on post-load, it should have shown the last 25 comments and remaining 2 comments on the ‘Older comments’ page #1. But it’s doing exactly the opposite. Only showing last 2 newer comments on post load and 25 comments on ‘Older comments’ i.e comments-page-1.

    Can you please provide a fix for this.

  • I would argue that it is doing exactly what you asked for.
    You told it to break the comments into sets of 25, and show the most recent comment page with the comments in ascending order. So it did. The last page of comments has only 2 on it.

    You apparently want it to show the most recent 25 comments, regardless of how many are left over from breaking it up into sets of 25.

    If I am setting it to show 25 most recent comments on page load – where this is happening? It’s not. As per your logic, it’s breaking it into group of 25 but NOT showing 25 recent comments on page load. That means the logic of grouping the comments is wrong.

    Here is an ideal example of what it should do.

    If there are 6 comments on a post and I am showing 5 per page it’s showing only
    comment #6 on post-load and comments #1,2,3,4,5 on comments-page-1.
    Instead of showing comments #2,3,4,5,6 on page load and comment #1 on comments-page-1.
    Where #1 – oldest comment and #6 – Latest comment.
