I am wondering if there is a way to make an excerpt for my site that will not appear in the actual post once the <more button> is clicked. If I use the <more> tag, it gives the look I want for the excerpt, but if I have leading text like this:

Why is that? Just click the “Read More” button below to find out.<!–more–>

I do not want that leading text to be visible in the actual post once a user clicks within the excerpt and is reading that post, as it no longer makes sense.

Not sure I am being clear, but let me know and I will try to clarify, if not.

try and make use of the $strip_teaser parameter of the_content();

i.e. use this kind of line in single.php of your theme:

the_content('', true);
