WordPress Backup Week July 23-30

  • WordPress is celebrating blog security and protection with WordPress Backup Week July 23-30.

    Step-by-step backup instructions will be available in the online manual, the WordPress Codex (https://codex.www.remarpro.com), and volunteers here will help you through the process.

    Your database contains every post, every comment and every link you have on your blog. If your database gets erased or corrupted, you stand to lose everything you have written. There are many reasons why this could happen and not all are things you can control. But what you can do is backup your data, after all, it is important isn’t it? Making backups is essential because problems inevitably occur and you need to be in a position to take action when disaster strikes.     WordPress Backup Week begins tomorrow. I’ve spent the last week talking about it and preparing for it. I’m sure that many of you have helped us spread the word about Backup Week and posted about this on your site. Thank you. And hopefully you have started thinking about what is involved in backing up your WordPress site.

    Hi all! I’ve made a few updates to Skippy’s wonderful wp-db-backup plugin, which allows you to backup your database directly from WordPress.

    You should check out Skippy’s original page on version 1.4, and then pop on over to RedAlt to download my updated version 1.5.

    Even if you’re not using this plugin, make sure you’re using something to backup your data. You never know when your server might catch on fire…

    I just backed up my site with Skippy/Ringmaster’s AWESOME backup plugin and I think that word sums it up.

    You can backup with one click which will generate a .gzip saved copy of your database, with the core WordPress files, which will pop up the File Save As window with instructions to download the backup to your hard drive.

    Or you can customize your choices. You can backup to your server and download it at your convenience, or click on the file link from the completion screen and download it then. If you choose the later, it will automatically delete the backup file from the server upon completion of the download.

    You can also choose to have it email you the backup. WOW!

    You can gzip or not gzip the file to compress it and save space. If you have a huge database to backup, and the memory on the server can’t handle the compression, it will automatically save the file unzipped. Wow!

    As you save the file, there is a progression bar that shows you what tables in your database are being backed up as they are being backed up. Very nice feature, especially for large databases, giving you something to look at on the screen as you tap your toes and wait for the backup to finish.

    You can also select non-core WordPress tables that are usually created by plugins in your database and include those in your backup.

    A HINT
    Avoid backing up any large tables like comment spam, statistics, and things you can live without. These are usually non-essential and can bloat your backup file.

    This plugin thing sounds great but I have a slow internet connection. Is there something on the intenret that I can send store files to? That would be way cool.

    All you have to do is get a Gmail account (or any large capacity email account) and set the plugin to email your backups to that Gmail account. By following this method, you will quickly turn Gmail’s 2+ gigabytes of email space into 2+ gigabytes of remote backup storage.

    This is a neat idea. Are there other ways of storing backups on the net? How long does an “email” sit in Gmail? Does it age?

    Lorelle, an email sits in GMail as long as you want. If it’s in your Inbox, then you don’t have to worry about losing it.

    What about other methods of storying backups on the net? Are there backup/storage space you can “rent”?

    lorelle: I believe there are a number of other on-line storage providers out there that you could use to store your backups. Some examples of these are:

    Usage of these sites will be harder to integrate within the plugin than using a gmail account where remote backup storage is only an email away ??

    Still, it’s good to know that there are other choices. And having a backup in one of those PLUS gmail…hmmm, that might be a wise way of spreading your options.

    My teenage nephew, who thinks he knows everything ?? (and I’m sure does), exclaimed that this was DUMB! “What if the whole Internet went down? You would lose your backups!”

    While his is the voice of ~~experience – eh hem ~~ speaking, it does raise a good point. I think the point comes from playing too many “destruction of the world” videos and watching similar movies, but access to the backups via the Internet takes on a whole new meaning when access TO the Internet is limited.

    Such is our life on the road sometimes where it may be a week or more between internet connections when we’re traveling, let alone time enough for long downloads or transfers of files.

    Having a variety of backup resources for us works well, so if “something” does happen to our site while traveling, without waiting for long downloads from the email or other online backup sites, we could upload from a backup on our computer or saved CD much faster.
