wordpress automatically updating itself to alpha?

On two sites we admin, WP has automatically updated itself to alpha versions of 4.0.
These sites are standard wp installs except that they are localised to GB (united kingdom).
Could this be the reason why?
Obviously, on a production client website, we don’t want to be quite so bleeding edge. How do we stop this happening in future?
