WordPress as CMS: multiple input boxes

I’ve just read Mike’s response at Mike Davidson’s blog re. WordPress as a news site solution.
After seven years as a CMS developer, I’m going to be joining an ad and p.r. agency in August as cross-media designer and I’m looking for *that* tool which will allow us to create great sites. I’ve used WordPress since it was b2 and hope that it’ll be able to do what we want it to! My question to you: do you have any reference information or links, which go into detail about creating sites using WordPress as a CMS. Specifically, I’m thinking of how to go about having multiple input boxes in the admin interface for each page, where content of each box can be controlled through the WordPress interface. Also, where content of (say) box2 can be inherited from a parent node. Graphics here:
