I got the following error right after activating the plugin:

The folder /home/username/example.com/htdocs/ is not write and/or readable.
Check if this folder is writeable by php user or www-data . File permissions should be chmod 755 or 777.

And yes, all my websites are under the dedicated user which is neither PHP user nor www-data user, and due to obvious security considerations. This would not be a problem if your plugin would use WordPress API. Considering you charge a nice sum for your PRO version, this is something you should definitely consider for future releases. Thank you.

    Hello @zjagust,

Even if we implement the WordPress file system API I don’t think the plugin could write into your root folder when you withdrew write access from it for security reason, but we can verify this.

Do you like to send me your system info to support [at] wp-staging.com?

When you contact us, we can try to find out together a way to make the free version work for you. For that, we will need to see the exact write permissions and owner of the folder your site uses.

(The pro version can create the staging site into another folder, which can have different file permissions)

    Cheers
    René
