I have various blogs that I have set up for our local model yachting clubs. These work fine with the wordpress domain.

Our governing body like the sites and have downloaded the software on their own server to allow all clubs access whilst being hosted on the same server.

Unfortunately alot of the funcionality has been removed compared to the wordpress domain.

Is this a deliberate thing or are there options not activated on the downloaded version.

    Help!

Just to clarify, you were using the managed wordpress.com version and now your using the self hosted www.remarpro.com version?

    What functionality are you missing?

You’ll have to bare with me, as this is all a bit new to me!

We have an association website that is run by 2 guys, they decided that to allow others to gain access that they would look to change it over to a wordpress based site.

To start this process they have downloaded wordpress and are running it through their server, i.e. with their domian name.

Separate to this I have set up a blogsite based around wordpress.com, which has been seen by our members and they want to replicate it but using the association domain name.

All going well so far, but when I offered to help them I found that the two versions are different and for example I would change a theme on my blog, and then load the same theme via the server, but on my blog I can add a picture to the header but on the other version it does not allow me?

Some of the widgets are different, and the process for invited people is different.

I was just wondering why this is, and how we get the functionality that I have on to the one that is loaded onto the association server.

    Or are they fundamentally different?

Excuse my ignorance if I am getting something confused.
    Thanks.

There are often differences between themes on wordpress.com and the same themes on self-hosted blogs and it is often impossible to download the wordpress.com version to a self-hosted blog. The only other option is to add the additional functionality to the self-hosted theme yourself.

“The only other option is to add the additional functionality to the self-hosted theme yourself.”

Does this mean building up a “corporate” theme then realeasing this to each of the clubs?

Slightly different question but, if we stick with wordpress.com, and generate each blog from a central account (just adding contributors to each new blog) is it possible to archive these blogs. Export?

Maybe you can find the theme you are using at wordpress.COM here:

You could have WordPress.COM host your site based on your Domain, there is some Mapping and such but it is possible to have your Domain name go to a WordPress.COM site. Cost is not much.

What functions are you missing on what version .COM or .ORG?

You also could have one central blog / site on WordPress.com and have each club be assigned it’s own Name as a Category then all posts would appear when you first visit the site then click on a Category to sort by Chapter. You can also use Categories to sort by Subject.

You can have a central account that controls several blogs on WordPress.com.

Yes you can Export from blogs. Your Posts or Articles stay on the blog until you deliberately delete them or I guess if the server crashed with no backups – all versions of WordPress have a sort of “Archive” in that older posts are pushed to the back of the line (standard order is by date of post – most recent first). Not sure of the options for the export or types of formats available.

WordPress.com’s base storage is 3 gb and you can purchase upgrades if there is a lot of material on your blog.

A few more options for you to think about.

I do both, I have a self hosted site and I maintain some sites on WordPress.com for some friends.

Hope this helps a bit or at least does not confuse too much.

    Good luck

    Thanks guys,

The theme we are using at present is Digg3, but on the self hosted version, pages are in a differnt place and there is no option to add a photo in the header, plus we cannot add a flickr widget.

All things that make it stand out abit.
The real crux to this problem is that by using WordPress.com anyone with a bit of software knowledge, i.e. can use word, can create an individual looking site, where as with.org it appears that you have more freedom but need more knowledge.

I just need to think about which version is the best for our needs.

The 2 sites i am talikng about are:

    Midland district mya

    Eastern district mya

we cannot add a flickr widget.

there are several flickr widgets in the plugin repository. I’ve used 2 with great success. Just search and see which one suits your needs

with.org it appears that you have more freedom but need more knowledge.

That is correct. You have much more power with self-hosted, but there is a learning curve.

Many Themes on WordPress.com have the ability to put a graphic or photo in the header. I am using the Ocean Mist Theme for a friends site with a sunset picture I took.

There is a Flickr Widget under Appearance / Widgets. Just drag the Widget over and drop in the Sidebar.
