Is the latest version of WordPress compatible with MySQL 8? My server is giving me an option to upgrade from 5.7 to 8 but I’m not sure if there are any issues with WordPress and I don’t want my WordPress sites to crash.

I saw an old article from July 2019 about it not work; but, I imagine since that time there’s been fixes for any issues. Any help and advice would be appreciated.

There are no specific issues between MySQL 8 and WordPress.

However,if you are upgrading yourself (own/dedicated server or VDS), then you’ll better read upgrade instructions before upgrading, here are some caveats for sysadmin.

The issue isn’t whether WordPress is compatible with MySQL8, it’s whether the version of PHP you’re using is compatible with MySQL8. The 7.4 branch of PHP is the only one that has support for the new authentication plugins used by MySQL8, but there have been nagging issues with that support. (This is no doubt the cause of the spike in “Error establishing a database connection” reports in the past year.)

If this is a notice being displayed in cPanel/Plesk/DirectAdmin, it’s safe to ignore. I suggest waiting a few months to let the PHP devs fix the issues in the mysqlnd extension, and at that point you can update to both PHP 7.4 and MySQL8.

Thanks. Everything appears to be working correctly.
