• Hello,
I am doing a site for a local business and they want a blog, for new items in the store. I was thinking of using wordpress but the business doesn’t want the a€?powered by wordpressa€? button/link or any off site links on the blog. Doesn’t the GPL say you have give credit? Does this situation count? I think it does but I wanted to ask because I like wordpress and would love to use it. So can I forgo the link/credit, if not what can I do to give credit in another way?

  • Raed the license.txt that comes with the package.

Too bad for them. Is it reasonable that a blog should add to their bottom line, but the work of all the people who contribute to WP not be acknowledged? They can’t have it both ways.

    Hooopla,
actually from a legal standpoint nobody is required to have a link back to WP – that would be a “linkware”. So, yes, they can have it like that ??

The GPL relates to distribution of the source. Despite what some of us may think of it, no one is required to display a “powered by” notice on their site. But remember: retaining it keeps the knife-wielding monkeys at bay.

Nice to hear that it isn’t required.

Nevertheless, even ZDNet Blogs (the largest site I know of to use WordPress) has a link back.

Naturally. ZDNet’s had problems with the knife-wielding monkeys before. They know just how dirty they fight.
