WordPress and domains question

    Hi there,

    I’m building a website in WP since yesterday, but before I go ‘all out’ (first time WP and building like a pro!) I have this rather important question. Let me try to explain as newbie:

    My present website is build on Ning. (…) hosted under the name: https://www.mypresentwebsite.com. So basically it’s redirecting to Ning. The website is active and online.

    At this very moment, I’m building (like a pro) the new website in WordPress, which I installed under the domain https://www.mynewwebsite.com.

    As I am a very simple person, this is what I had in mind:
    After I finish my website in WordPress on https://www.mynewwebsite.com, I ask the hosting provider to place the new website under https://www.mypresentwebsite.com, or vice versa.

    Is this simple or what? But does that work that way? That my friends, is my question to you. ??

    Can someone help me out? Thanks!

    The details depend on where you are hosting the websites and, perhaps more important, where you have registered the domains.

    • You may have to transfer the domain registration for mypresentwebsite.com to the new registrar (where you registered mynewwebsite.com)
    • Backup the site once you have it working as https://www.mynewwebsite.com and before you try to change its address
    • You will need to go to Administration > Settings > General and change the WordPress address and Site Address to replace mynewwebsite.com with mypresentwebsite.com. [Do that just before you do the next step since the site will stop working when you do that. Be sure you have the site backed up before you do this.]
    • You will need to use the tools in your domain registrar to point mypresentwebsite.com to your WordPress installation, just like you set up mynewwebsite.com to point to that installation (or talk to your hosting support people if they did that for you).

    If while you’ve been building the site, you’ve used any absolute URLs, e.g. “https://www.mynewwebsite.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/myfile” for images or attachments, you should go back and fix those to relative, e.g. “/wp-content/uploads/2012/myfile” …

    PS: I usually use https://www.mysite.xxx and test.mysite.xxx when running two separate installations so I don’t have to pay for more than one top level domain.
