• i have 3 wordpress sites for our company all on the same ftp server and host. for some reason, only on 2 of the sites, the admin pages now look like this:

    https://sodpit.com/wpx.png

the admin pages for these 2 sites is now completely dysfunctional. nothing works. i can’t run any updates, it just shows the spinning icon but is either stuck in “updating 1/x” or “unpacking the package” eternally. it adds a .maintenance file each time which i have to manually delete after waiting for the update to process for an hour or so. i have attempted all the usual things like manually removing all plugins, etc, to no avail. i have checked the ownership and permissions of the folders, nothing seems to be out of place.

could this be a database problem or something?

is anyone else having this problem?

sorry if this has already been posted, i’ve spent hours searching for help on this one but it seems it’s an odd issue. most people with similar problems are either a multi-site user (which i’m not) or the admin page just comes up white for them. my admin page comes up, but it is unformatted (very ugly) and 100% not functioning. it isn’t browser specific (i’ve tried in chrome, chromium, opera, firefox and internet explorer). i’ve tried in windows xp and windows 7.

keep in mind, 1 of the 3 sites works perfectly.

oh, i did try manually updating wordpress (which i will try again soon) and when i was done the admin page looked perfectly normal… the formatting was all back to normal BUT… the upgrade functions were still not working and would always get stuck in the same states i mentioned earlier.

dang this is weird. anyway, i think that covers it.

    thanks for any help!

possibly resolved, i will report back soon.

my hosting company has php 5.2.17 and 5.3.8. 5.3.x can only be used if “AddHandler application/x-httpd-php53 .php” (no quotes) is in the .htaccess file.

well, until this week that was working fine, but evidently something is wrong with their php 5.3.x because as soon as i commented this line the 2 sites worked 100% normally. one odd exception is when i logout of the admin side and just view it as a normal user. it gets ugly, but this might be a theme problem.

    anyway, it might be solved!

I have been trying to log into my website as an administrator for more than two hours. I changed my password twice. Each time, when I logged in it would lot accept the user name it had given me when it sent me the temporary password. The log in seems to work for this forum. I still can’t log in. I am not a website expert or an experienced techie. I see that this problem has been going on for years and some of those posting the questions are experienced website consultants.
What is going on and how do I get into my site.

@bonnieo your problem isn’t related to my original post here, you might want to post it to the main forum for help.

my initially reported problem is resolved per my previous post, however, i’m not sure if the problem is:

    1) wordpress 3.4.1 does not work with php 5.3.8 or:

    2) my host’s php 5.3.8 is somehow not working properly

i will look around for more answers before closing this thread.

i want to mark this resolved, but… is there a problem with wordpress 3.4.1 working with php 5.3.x?
