Previously, WordPress updated automatically to the latest version, and there was an “Update” option. Now I’m seeing “WordPress 6.0.3 is available! Please notify the site administrator.” and there’s no update option. I am logged in as administrator, and the latest version installed in the version file is 6.0.2. This is new to me. I looked at previous answers to similar questions but the circumstance were different (this site wasn’t hacked, etc.).

    TIA.

  • Hi,

Are you seeing some preventive code on your wp-config.php file? It would be something like define( 'WP_AUTO_UPDATE_CORE', false ); If you see this, can you change the value to TRUE and then check your admin page again?

If not, you can try deactivating all plugins, and then refresh the Updates section on your dashboard, it might be something is preventing the button to show.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks. I should have mentioned I looked at the config file and it didn’t have anything about AUTO_UPDATE (true or false). I deactivated all plug-ins, refreshed, and nothing changed (also just did it again just in case). I’m baffled — it auto updated to 6.0.2, and I was able to see Updates previously. I haven’t made any changes since then (not added plug-ins, etc.).

I also don’t appear to have the option to update or delete plug-ins . . . I can activate/deactivate, but not remove.

Looking back at Activity on the mobile app, on 10/2 I see a series of:

    DAJTEMU
    Post published
    DAJTEMU
    Post deleted

occurring 16 times. There were no unusual logins or attempts at logins. I’ve found this on some WordPress blogs but haven’t figured out what it means or indicates.

I found videos, etc., saying to change this in the wp-config.php file:
“define(‘disallow_file_mods’ true)” and in last step “change true to false” in disallow file mods.

I don’t have this in the config file, so am still at a loss.

Disallow_file_mods is just hiding the file editor items in your WordPress Dashboard but is unrelated to updates not going through.

Do you happen to change at any point in time editing your user role or capabilities? Can you create a new administrator account on your site and try if you can update through that account?

Dave of Prohosting tech support figured it out, and I’m embarrassed at the solution. While I disabled plugins as a possible cause, it didn’t occur to me to disable the theme (Weaver Xtreme). Once it was switched to the TwentyTwo theme, he was able to update WordPress, and I updated plugins.

A good reminder to check themes as well as plugins.

Malicious files affecting the theme and some other things were the culprit. I found one, and Wordfence found the rest.
