• Since the latest big WordPress update, I have noticed some weird things happening with images. Has anybody else noticed these and know what to do about them?

    – Images Loaded After The Update: In the Media Library, they show completely normal (regular image URL, showing the correct sizing etc). However, if I go into a published post and right click to open the image in a new tab, things are a little strange. The URL on that tab shows sizing in it. That isn’t normally part of the URL and the sizing is also smaller than what it was loaded in as. This is only happening on posts published after the WordPress update. Those from before are normal.

    – On the other hand, I also noticed that when I go into “Edit Post” on posts created before the update, it shows all the images as Image Size “Thumbnail” instead of the “Full Size” I would have selected at the time. Now they say Thumbnail but show the full size image dimensions underneath.

I know that the WordPress update was automatically updating really large images and changing the file name to include “scaled” in it. However, the 2 things noted above are different issues since all these images are below that threshold and not showing any resizing applied within WordPress itself.

Hm, that’s not what was changed in 5.3 with regards to images.

This may be a plugin or theme conflict. Please attempt to disable all plugins, and switch to the default Twenty Twenty theme. If the problem goes away, enable them one by one to identify the source of the problem.

If you can install plugins, install Health Check. On the troubleshooting tab, you can click the button to disable all plugins and change the theme for you, while you’re still logged in, without affecting normal visitors to your site.
