• Updated to 5.0. In addition to Updating Failed (another thread), I am also seeing that I can no longer choose any of my categories. They are still in the left sidebar of wordpress where I can create and edit them, but I cannot choose what category I want my new posts to belong to, and I cannot edit my existing post categories.

This is pretty important for me.

    In addition to Updating Failed

First, try MANUALLY updating. Download WordPress again and unzip it, and use that to copy up. Access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel (consult your hosting provider’s documentation for specifics on these), and delete then replace your copies of everything on the server EXCEPT the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory with fresh copies from the download. This will effectively replace all of your core files without damaging your content and settings. (NOTE: do not delete the?wp-content?directory or your?wp-config.php?file). Please read the Manual Update directions first.

Backup: If you haven’t already done, always backup everything (including your database) before doing any actions, just in case something really goes wrong. You can never have enough backups!

Geez. Sounds like this product was not ready to be rolled out.

I am hoping to downgrade back to the other one. I hear there is a plugin. I wish I hadn’t updated at all.

    Hi @gatehealing,

When creating or editing a post in the new Block Editor, you can select the categories and tags for the post in the right sidebar. If the right sidebar isn’t visible, click the cog icon in the top right of the toolbar. The “Categories” and “Tags” sections are close to the bottom of the sidebar.

    No, they aren’t:

Gatehealing, if you post and then view all posts and hit “Quick Edit” on the post in question, categories _are_ appearing in the Quick Edit function. I’m posting and immediately adding categories that way until this gets fixed.

@mattshepherd @gatehealing Can you click the icon with the three dots next to the cog icon (on the far right in the toolbar), click the “Options” menu item in the bottom and check that “Categories” and “Tags” are present and checked beneath the “Document Panels” heading?

The categories would only not display if you somehow turned off ‘show in rest’ for them. Are you using a plugin that blocks or edits the rest api?

Thanks. The trouble is, I did exactly that, and there is only a link that reads “create new category.” That’s it. No categories are listed where they are supposed to be.

    Thx

Did all of that. I can see the categories section, but none of my categories are listed, but they are def there as I can go to edit them where I created them. As Matt says, I can see them in quick edit.

I have no security plugins, have tried disabling all plugins and I have checked my .htaccess to see if anything is blocking, and there just isn’t, unless i am missing something. I think perhaps rather than users somehow turning off ‘show in rest’ that perhaps the product still has a few bugs to be worked out.

They are not present (so can’t be checked):

There it is: deactivating them one by one, I see that iThemes Security inhibits the “Categories” from appearing.

@gatehealing, when I deactivate iThemes my categories also don’t appear when I expand “categories” on the right, but DO appear if I then click underneath the word “Categories,” in the blank piece of space created by the flyout.

@ipstenu: Thanks for pointing this out. This leaves me in a bit of a bind, as iThemes Security is a pretty essential plugin to enhance WP security. I’ll move this conversation over to their forums and let them know 5.0 isn’t playing nicely.

    Side note to @miketurnermk,

Please do not jump into other topics. If the troubleshooting already posted made no difference for you, then, as per the Forum Welcome, please post your own topic. A lot more people will see your post this way. That way you stand a good chance of getting the assistance you want. Despite any similarity in symptoms, your issue is likely to be completely different because of possible differences in physical servers, accounts, hosts, plugins, theme, configurations, etc. Thus one problem, on one setup is not indicative of the functionality and reliability of an application as a whole.
