• I’m running WordPress 2.7.1 and I have a custom 404 page for when someone enters a URL that doesn’t exist on my server. The custom 404 page has always worked in previous versions of IE, but then I upgraded to IE 8 and it stopped working reliably with that browser. When IE 8 users try to visit an invalid URL, sometimes the custom 404 page shows up and other times I just get the default “this page cannot be displayed” page that comes with IE. Any idea why this is happening? It works sometimes but not every time.

My custom 404 page seems to work fine in all other browsers that I have tested it with.

The easiest way to recreate this problem is to visit a non-existent page on my blog, for instance, the URL https://abroadinspain.com/why-doesnt-404-work should suffice. As you’ll see, the custom 404 will appear in any browser except for IE 8.

Thanks in advance for your help!

  • Hi,

Delete 404.php file from the theme folder of your wordpress blog and upload your customized 404 page…and make sure that your Front Page Display under Settings, Reading looks like you’re not using Posts, only Pages – I for your blog .it is it then set it to default…

    Thanks,

    Shane G.

    Shane,

Thanks for the reply… but I’ve already done all that stuff. I have my custom 404 page uploaded to my server and working in every browser EXCEPT IE 8.0. I just can’t figure out why it works in every browser expect for IE 8.

Has anyone else experienced this problem and how do I fix it?

    Thanks again,
    Chris

UPDATE: I thought this problem could be due to my older version of wordpress, so I updated to 2.8.2, but the problem still persists.

This is really bugging me. Anyone know why my custom 404 page doesn’t show up in IE 8 but shows up in any other browser?

You can view my page at https://abroadinspain.com. To re-create the error, vist a page that doesn’t exist on my server such as https://abroadinspain.com/this-aint-there. In all browsers, my custom 404 page will display EXCEPT for in IE 8.

Is this an issue with the wordpress software itself or is this an IE issue?? Please, if you know anything about this post a reply here.

Have you looked at the solution on this website? https://wpcanada.ca/2008/03/20/ie-and-custom-error-pages/

I did as told, and now I’m getting the 404 page in all browsers.
