• Hi,

I am still on WordPress 4.9.1 branch and I am seeing all these updates for WordPress 5.2.x and I wonder if there will be any updates for the WordPress 4.9.x branch?

Or have I missed out on any updates? I only get notifications in my WordPress admin dashboard to update on the 5.2.x branch which I have not (yet) gotten into.

For anyone wondering why, I have many sites and cannot deal with the problems that may happen due to theme or plugin incompatibility.

  • That’s not how updates work in WordPress. There is no 4 branch or 5 branch. There’s a single branch of releases that are numbered like so:

    3.9 > 3.9 > 4.0 > 4.1 > 4.2 > ... 4.7 > 4.8 > 4.9 > 5.0 > 5.1

It just ticks over whenever the second number reaches 9.

So 5.0 was just the next version after 4.9. There’s never going to be, and there never was going to be a 4.10 or anything like that. The same way there was never a 3.10 or 2.10.

In terms of compatibility the biggest change between 4.9 and 5.0 was the new block editor. It’s true that themes and plugins need to be updated to properly take advantage of it, and it’s also true that some plugins and themes might have custom functionality that is not supported in the new editor. So for those cases the Classic Editor plugin was released.

The classic editor plugin disables the new editor so the WordPress editing experience continues to behave the way it did in 4.9 and earlier. With it installed the 5.x updates are just like any other WordPress update. Currently the plan seems to be that the classic editor plugin will be supported through 2021.

Security fixes and on rare occasions feature enhancements are backported to older versions of WordPress. The current version in the 4.9 branch is 4.9.10, which was released about three months ago. It is as secure as the current release in the 5.2 branch. You can view (and download) all WordPress releases here:

I believe you can configure WordPress to automatically update your sites to the latest version in the 4.9 branch. There are plugins available (such as WP Downgrade) that will keep your sites on the 4.9 branch forever, and stop the nags to update to the newest branch.

WordPress 4.9.x will receive security updates when required for that version. Keep in mind that 5.2 is the latest version, so bugs will be identified in the new features to that version (as well as 5.0 and 5.1), which will not apply to earlier versions without those features (e.g. Site Health and the Block Editor).

Thanks for the answers guys. I am wondering if I will also see any updates for the WordPress 4.9.x in my WordPress dashboard (if any updates do come up)?

It has been quite a while since the last update for WordPress 4.9.x so I was worried maybe something was wrong that I was not getting any update notifications (except for WordPress 5.2.x).

You won’t be notified that there is a new 4.9.x version in the Dashboard. WordPress only offers to update to the latest version. If a new security fix is release that is back-ported to 4.9 then your site will automatically update to it. You should receive an email whenever this happens. The last such release was in March.

Not seeing these updates frequently is a good thing. It means there’s no major security issues that have been discovered.
