WordPress 3.5 has broken my ADD MEDIA button!

I’m having trouble with the add media system too… but mostly with linking. When I add an image that has a custom link, and then add text below it with a link, WP strips the link from the text below and adds an extra space instead. It is not user-friendly at all to have to switch from wysiwyg to html back and forth for each post.

also, I notice that it has broken my theme… the calendar is now floating randomly in space… but only on post view. Here’s an example:

I’ve deactivated all plug-ins and using the 2011 theme, and my “Add Media” button is still broken. It does nothing 99% of the time–and, frustratingly, it works 1% of the time. I can’t figure out what the difference might be.

I’ve tried it on Firefox and on Chrome. Still nothing.

Ive looked at these trouble shooting steps and when it refers to the ADD MEDIA button in the CORE changes, it refers to a ‘drag-and-drop box’ for images and ‘create an image gallery’, when I looked into these it doesn’t change anything as the button still doesn’t work and doesn’t seem to relate to the problem at all! Nothing WP seems to do is User-friendly for people who arne’t techy!!!

@peter Smart: Have you tried:

– deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

– switching to the Twenty Twelve theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

– resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

– re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

@everyone else: As per the Forum Welcome, post your own topics. Posting in an existing topic prevents us from being able to track issues by topic. Added to which, your problem – despite any similarity in symptoms – is likely to be completely different.

Ive deactivated and reactivated them one at a time and nothing changes. As stated before I use my own theme and so the twenty Twelve theme isn’t relevant. I think i’m going to have to upload the old version I was using though this takes an age! grrrr….

A friend of mine who’s a web designer can’t help me with this until the 13th of January! If I try this myself and make a mistake I could loose everything and my website is my livelihood!

And what about the rest of the steps suggested above? Welcome to WordPress Troubleshooting 101 – a process of elimination deliberately designed to locate the root cause as quickly as possible by first removing the most obvious and common culprits.

Re. re-uploading all files & folders –

Do you mean re-uploading all my photos? and where is the wp-content folder in the control panel? this is all a bit gobbledy gook to me I’m afraid! I don’t know anything about code and changing things in the FTP or PhpMyAdmin looked complicated!

No – just the WorPress core files and folders with the exception of the wp-content folder.

If you cannot manage this yourself, perhaps you need to consider hiring someone to carry out the work for you.

I’ll have a go at your suggestions, are there any pitfalls I need to be wary of? and is there a chance of doing something that can make matters worse by doing what you’ve said?

Peter, esmi kindly helped me fix my problem, which is similar to yours. It took only a few minutes, but it’s not for the non-technologically inclined. I’ll run you through what I did, briefly. But be forewarned: I broke my entire site for a few minutes. I was able to fix it, but if your livelihood requires your site, I’d drop the $30, say, to just have someone do it.

1) I used an FTP program to connect to my host.
2) There, with quite a bit of searching (the trick was knowing to display hidden files) I found wp-config.php.
3) I added a line to the bottom of the file using a plain text editor (not a typical text editor, like Word)
4) I then uploaded the file back onto my host, replacing the original file.
5) That broke my website.
6) I started again, fixed a missing semicolon, and solved the problem.

Much thanks to esmi, but seriously, my friend, it was nerve-wracking for me, and I know a little bit about what I’m doing and my job doesn’t depend on my site. I’m going to guess that you should hire someone (not me!) to do it for you. It’ll only take them 10 minutes. It can’t cost much.

Almost all of the suggestions I posted above can be reversed very easily. The only thing you do have to be careful about is uploading fresh copies of the WordPress core files & folders. Do not touch the wp-content folder. And do not delete your root wp-config.php file or any root .htaccess file.
