• I upgraded to 3.4 using the automatic feature. Now NONE of the individual posts on my blog will load. They ALL get a “The page you requested could not be found”. I restored a backup to my database which fixes the problem but when I log in to my dashboard it REQUIRES me to ‘upgrade’ my WP database before proceeding, so it installs 3.4 again and everything is screwed up again. I have deactivated all plugins…no change. Dumped the cache…no change. rest permalinks…nothing. My ‘broken link checker’ plugin even flags ALL of my posts as having broken links.

FYI if you look at my site now I have restored my database to 3.3 so it works….until I try to log in and have to update WP database.

    Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress.

    – re-running the upgrade

    Tried them all. No dice.

I had high hopes for this:

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress.

    The problem is once I try to open my dashboard WP requires;

    “Database Update Required

WordPress has been updated! Before we send you on your way, we have to update your database to the newest version.

The update process may take a little while, so please be patient.”

It forces me to click on:

    “Update WordPress Database”

Which apparently then installs the 3.4 wp-content folder contents. When I re-uploaded everything BUT that folder from a fresh download of 3.4 the site worked fine. But like I said I can’t get to admin without clicking on the “Update WordPress Database”.

    still trying to fix this

OK…I fixed it. And I am disgusted at how simple it was to do. I have been using a Custom Structure for permalinks: /%post_id%/%postname%/

I changed the Permalink setting to Default and noted that the links then all worked.

I changed back to the Custom Structure and the problem came back.

I deleted the /%post_id%/%postname%/ in the blank next to the custom structure, changed back to Default, then re-entered /%post_id%/%postname%/ in the custom structure blank and changed back to Custom Structure.

Voilà! For no good reason that fixed it.

This after doing all the above suggestions over and over, installing my back up database countless times, searching high and low for a solution….
