    hi,

i have installed wordpress 2.0.12-alpha on debian etch using the instructions here… https://linux.justinhartman.com/Wordpress_Installation_on_Debian

because the 5min install instructions had some short comings namely custom permalinks could not be made to work.

back to 2.0.12-alpha. i have to install the plugins and themes by hand is there any instructions still around on how to do that?

after looking over a few threads on upgrading it looks to be an arduous task with some pitfalls and hazards to the uninitiated.

    please advise.

  • There are none (short-comings) if the server side resources are properly configured and the requirements are met – and you aren’t doing an “apt-get install wordpress”.

I think the permalink issue is most often related to mod_rewrite installation and configuration.

This is only my opinion, but I have always thought that Debian distros seem to bastardize ( is that an actual word? ) the WordPress installation and update paths when they convert WordPress to a .deb package and place it in a repository. You wind up with a large handful of symlinked files, and several tangles of “abstraction layered” cruft in what should be an otherwise quick, clean and painless experience.

Relying on Debian repos’ for the latest WordPress .deb packages = time wasted

Installing a proper lamp server and manually placing the latest version of WordPress in the httpd document root =
a thing of beauty, perhaps even just short of a spiritual experience, in fact. ??

    …Just my opinion.

Unless you plan to turn on the ftp or ssh server and deal with those issues, that might be the safest and most expedient method on a local/development server.

    Adding Plugins

[edit] in a nutshell: download themes and plugins manually, extract them and place them in the /wp-content/themes, /wp-content/plugins directory.

    ty clayton,

your discourse just about sums up what i have been observing.

i am indeed doing a debian “apt-get install wordpress” install. its the only way i can get the custom permalinks to work so far on this server.

the short comings with a .deb package install are as you articulated.

on the other side of the coin i do feel that the .deb wordpress install is the right way for me on my debian server. having only a sym-link in my www directory with core files that only root can write to seems much more robust if less elegant.

i guess i will have to wait until i deploy my next wordpress site on an ubuntu 9.10 lamp to enjoy the features in the newer releases of wordpress.

in the mean time i just add plugins and themes by hand.
