WordPress 1.2 One Click Backup

  • A new version of the backup scripts for WordPress 1.2 Mingus is now available. This has been tested with 1.2 Mingus and the instructions have been updated along with some of the code.
    Some of the new and original features are:

    • One click backup of the WordPress MySql database which can be then downloaded from your browser without the use of any FTP client.
    • One click backup of all the files inside your WordPress folder which can then be downloaded from your browser.
    • Date coded backup named for sql files and zipped WordPress files.
    • Better checking of user level. This menu is only available to users with level 10 (or admin) and every backup/restore script has user checking built in to prevent un authorized usage of this tool.
    • One click restore of database (if you have a Linux server)
    • More streamlined SQL creation resulting in faster backups and cleaner dumps.

  • AWESOME plugin, brah… props

    I just used it successfully on what I believe is a Windows based host. CHMOD was not available on the ftp server, but you can set directory permissions using the EnSim control panel. It worked great. Thanks!

    Question: The read me says not to use this for daily archival. So what is the recommended procedure for daily archive? I’m interested in being able to restore to the state before I start messing with CSS and Plug-ins and stuff, if I screw up completely.

    I can only think that if you used it daily, and did not download all the files, you would be hugely increasing the size of your site with all the stored data.

    I installed this version by mistake into a 1.0.2 Blakey version of WP and realized (after posts to the board) that this was why this later version Backup script wasn’t working.
    However, I carefully reversed the file mods and then installed the retro version for the 1.0.2 I’m running.
    The Backup/Restore Link doesn’t seem to show anywhere in the Admin Panel. Is this a telltale sign of where the problem might be? My hosting service told me point blank that I don’t have command line access to MySql, and the script may not work because of this, but I’d like to leave it in anyway, and would also like to know if this would keep the Link from displaying. My hunch is that these are unrelated.

    Why not upgrade to WP v1.2.1?
    P.S. If my host “told me point blank that I don’t have command line access to MySql”, then I’d get a different host. You are a paying customer after all.

    Generally good advice macmanx. However, I wanted to test drive the backup script in this version to do a backup before upgrading. I was able to do one just now in PhpMyAdmin. However, I want to restore the backup to a new database just to make sure it was properly backed up before doing the upgrade. I guess this would be the same if I used the OneClick Backup script, but I guess it just bothers me that this script doesn’t seem to work.
    Also, I agree about the hosting issue, except that this WP edition is a non-profit and the hosting services are being donated. They are super-conservative, and maybe I’m better off with their extra precautions so I’d rather work around them. Sure would like to know why I can’t see that Backup button though.

    Is there any way to limit the backup to certain tables, perhaps based on the prefix?

    I have three blogs running on three subdomains; they share a database but (obviously) have different table prefixes.

    Ideally, each user will be able to back up their own tables independently of each other, but I’m not confident enough with SQL to attempt to hack the plugin.

    Can anyone help? Thanks in advance…

    I tried the solution on top of this page in the nightly from 28-12-2004, and got this error-message:

    Fatal error: Cannot redeclare add_magic_quotes() (previously declared in /home/httpd/vhosts/spoenk.nl/httpdocs/wordpress-beta/wp-admin/backupRestore.php:157) in /home/httpd/vhosts/spoenk.nl/httpdocs/wordpress-beta/wp-includes/functions.php on line 1658

    Any idea why it’s not working?

    This works for me on 1.5 01.04.05 nightly. No guarantees though, so you should NOT install this in your production blog and you should NOT do anything if you don’t know what you are doing.

    I corrected the filename so the link should work now.
