    Hey peeps,

I have Wordfence 4.0.3, and when I begin a scan, it gets terminated and I receive this message:

“Scan terminated with error: Wordfence could not read the contents of your base WordPress directory. This usually indicates your permissions are so strict that your web server can’t read your WordPress directory.”

I’m new to Wordfence and am unfamiliar with a couple of aspects of it. Any tips on how to fix this so I can start scanning?

Thanks for everybody’s consideration in this matter.

    Hi,

Are you running a Windows server? Wordfence isn’t officially supported on Windows, just FYI. If not, let me know and I’ll try to help.

    Regards,

    Mark.

Ahh, thank you so much for your reply. Yes, my operating system is ‘Windows 7’, so perhaps that’s the reason for the inability to scan my site. I didn’t know that ??

I’m asking about your web server operating system, not your own machine. Is that Windows or Linux?

    Regards,

    Mark.

    Hi Mark.
The sites I have running on linux are fine but I have the same issue with one on windows. Are there any options?

I was advised to have the option below unchecked? Is this correct?
    Enable firewall

    Im getting this error also:

“Wordfence could not read the contents of your base WordPress directory. This usually indicates your permissions are so strict that your web server can’t read your WordPress directory.”

I can’t be certain if I am being protected by anyone using dictionary/brute force attacks of which I am assuming that the Blocked IP’s will show, although it is blank with the error above the Box.

Im using Ubuntu 12.04 as my Server.

    What is restricting the permissions?

    CPKN

Directory permissions are a server issue, not something we control. What Mark mentioned earlier is that the permissions don’t allow WordPress, and by inclusion Wordfence, to connect to itself to start a scan. You can try ‘start scans remotely’ on the options page to see if that works, but I suspect you may have issues with admin-ajax being blocked if everything is locked down. One way to check for problems is to open the javaScript Console and see what errors show in red.

For future reference, forum rules say to open your own thread so issues don’t get missed.

    Thanks!

    tim
