• I have the following error with the wordfence plugin. This has started since the most recent wordfence plugin update.

IP addresses in live traffic are always showing up with either , a) my own server IP or, b) the IP address of our CDN provider.
This is happening despite trying both the “X forwarded” and “X real” settings for https://docs.wordfence.com/en/Wordfence_options#How_does_Wordfence_get_IPs

I’ve tried all the different options there, as well as disabling the website cache and everything suggested from multiple forum threads. It still has the same issue of showing the wrong IP addresses.

  • If you aren’t seeing visitor’s actual IP addresses, and you have tried all of the settings in ‘how wordfence gets its IPs’ then you may need to ask the CDN provider if they provide a way to pass the correct IP to the server. Many, like cloudflare, offer plugins that do that.

This seems to be related to a change in version 6.2.8 which altered the way that Wordfence parses the X-Forwarded-For header.

If the header contains multiple IP addresses, Wordfence will show the last IP address in the array as the client address – which, in most cases, is the IP address of a CDN or Reverse Proxy and not the actual client.
