I had an email from Wordfence yesterday saying that the Wordfence plugin needed upgrading, but when I went to update it, the plug-in had disappeared from my plug-in list and the menu on the side panel to the left is gone.

I tried to install it as new again, but I got this message:

    Destination folder already exists. /var/sites/s/societyofselfesteem.co.uk/public_html/wp-content/plugins/wordfence/

    Plugin install failed.

If someone could help me I would really appreciate it as I have found this plug-in really helpful and I want to keep using it. Thanks, Lou

  • Hi, Lou – you could probably just use FTP to go into the following directory:

    “/var/sites/s/societyofselfesteem.co.uk/public_html/wp-content/plugins”

and rename the “wordfence” folder to something like “wordfence.old”.

Then, just go back into your WP admin area and the plugin should install.

    Hi,

We’ve heard of this happening a few times with Wordfence and also with other plugins — it seems to have a few different possible causes. Some seemed to be low disk space, and one was due to running out of memory during an update. You might find a reason in the site’s error log, to determine what may need to be fixed. I’d recommend turning off the automatic update in Wordfence for now, if you’re not sure what caused it, so you can update manually next time to see if anything unusual happens.

@ideafusionmedia’s solution is usually the best option to get the plugin reinstalled. Since Wordfence stores its data in the database, your settings should all still be available.

    Thanks, both of you.

Matt, the whole plug-in was nowhere to be seen on the wp dashboard – it had disappeared from the plug-in list and the whole menu was gone too.

I used FTP and renamed the folder like you said Ideafusionmedia and reinstalled the plug-in no probs – so all fine now!

    Thanks for your help. Lou

I had this same problem and fixed it. I had to go into the hostings cpanel and then located the the plugins folder within wordpress. I could see the wordfence folder there. I then changed the name of it just to be careful to wordfence_x just on case!

I then reinstalled the wordfence plugin (which it did) checked it all worked and then deleted the wordfence_x folder.

    All ok now. Good luck.
