• Greetings all. We have a maintenance release for Wordfence today. Please update as soon as you are able.

We have heard reports from a few users of legitimate googlebots being blocked. As you know, we have always tried to make sure our users aren’t blocking Google or harming their SEO at all. Anytime someone reports a potential issue with blocking Google we take it very seriously. Having said that, as soon as we got some reports on this we began working on a better detection solution than the one we were using. We’re now using a double verification method to make sure that google can see your site without hindrance.

When a request from a googlebot comes in we now
    a) do a ptr lookup on the local isp dns of the customer’s server to check to see if it belongs to google
    b) if it fails that, we look up on google’s dns server directly (in case it comes without a header) to see if the IP belongs to google
If the request passes one or the other check the IP is given full access to the site.

This patch addresses that concern and we recommend upgrading as soon as possible.

Thanks everyone for great comments and suggestions. Send any of those you might have to [email protected] and someone will get back to you.
