    After update of Wordefence, today,

our readers receive an error message when they want to read our newspaper and are shown an error message…

    and

our editors get the same error message when we try to log into the admin area…

We URGENTLY need help, real help, to solve that problem.

    Thanks for a swift response.

    Chris..

NB.: On a personal note: It’s absolutely upsetting and disgraceful that WordPress providers, i.e. Wordfence, Automattic, don’t TEST products until they are 100 % safe before releasing them. We need more ACCOUNTABILITY in this community, including economic liability for professional companies who inflict economic and other damage on others.

Thank you for creating your own topic. Unrelated to your problem but this needs addressing.

I’ve added emphasis to parts of your quote.

We need more ACCOUNTABILITY in this community, including economic liability for professional companies who inflict economic and other damage on others.

Unless you have a financial relationship with the plugin author i.e. you are their paying customer then full stop with that line of thought.

You are a plugin user and you are not that author’s customer and there is zero economic recourse for using a free plugin that has free volunteer support. If you have a problem with a plugin then the full responsibility and recourse is 100% on you: stop using that plugin.

Your installation is your responsibility. You elected to install this and other plugins and those decisions are on you. The plugin author does not owe you anything at all including support. That the author does support their plugin is very cool but that support has always been optional.

Now if you do have an economic relationship with the author and you are their customer then you are posting in the wrong place. These forums are not for supporting any author’s commercial product and you’ll need to contact the author on their own site.

The author is aware that they cannot support their customer’s on these forums.

Related to your problem: what was the error messages that you are getting? You post above doesn’t contain that text.

    Daer Mr. Dembrowsky.

    Error message is gone now.

We contacted webhost which deactivated the …. (plugin)
The trouble is that the plugin page claims its compatible with 3.1 and higher and that is not the case. It is compatible with 3.7.1 and higher.

On an additional note: One more case of lacking reliability that plagues those of us who use wordpress professionally. Ultimately, it is a question of wordpress’s survival as a platform used by newspapers etc.. Others are there,.. would be a shame. Maybe it would be a really great idea to discuss the implementation of appropriate quality control, an ISO kind of system – it would create much needed trustworthiness. Thank you for your concern.

snsssbcc? The last name is “Dembowski”. No “R” and not a “y” at the end. ??

The plugins and themes hosted on WordPress are vetted by a small group of hard working individuals who are all volunteering on their own time. But there are 30,000+ plugins and it is impossible to QA all of them. Except for a cursory inspection there’s not really a lot that the reviewers can do to solve your problem that way.

Note that www.remarpro.com is staffed by unpaid volunteers who help out of the goodness of their hearts. Honest.

You do have options though. I suggest that you setup a parallel installation and QA new or updated plugins on that non-production installation. With a good routine for maintaining your site like that then there really isn’t any plugin issues that can become urgent.

Yes doing that does mean more work for you. But as you’ve indicated yours is a professional site and that really needs to be part of that work load.

Firstly, thanks Jan for being a volunteer moderator. Really appreciate you helping out on the forums.

Hi Chris, I’m the plugin creator. I’d really like to help solve any issue you have. It looks like you posted your original message 2 hours ago, so hopefully we’re getting back to you soon enough to help out.

To be clear, we’re not some group of hackers in a basement. Wordfence is owned by Feedjit Inc. of which I’m CEO. You’re welcome to reach out to me at mark @ wordfence dot com. If you’re running a business, I’d love to see how we can work together.

Wordfence the product is put through rigorous QA before we release it which is controlled by Kerry Boyte, my co-founder. She has built and run large QA teams at prestigious firms like the BBC and Symantec. In fact she built the BBC’s digital TV testing lab from the ground up. So you might say we know a thing or two about testing.

However it sounds like we missed a bug. But it also sounds like you’re running an older version of WordPress correct? Admittedly our test coverage on older versions is lacking because we consider it important for site security that all our customers run the newest version of WordPress. Presumably if you’re keeping Wordfence up-to-date you’re also upgrading WordPress itself.

Chris, I think you have probably wasted enough time on advocacy in this thread and it sounds like you have a business to run, so if you can post the error you received, we’ll give it our swift attention. As Jan mentioned if you’re a paying customer please visit https://support.wordfence.com/ where we’ll give you the priority support you’ve paid for.

    Kind regards,

    Mark Maunder
Wordfence Founder and Feedjit Inc CEO.

PS: Our terms of service including limitation of liability clause are available here. They’re fairly standard and you’ll find much common ground in the ToS of other SaaS providers and software companies.

Quick update on this: Looks like you’re having the is_404() issue. Please see my response in the other thread you posted in. You probably want to disable debugging on your site. Change this in your wp-config.php

    define(‘WP_DEBUG’, true);

    to

    define(‘WP_DEBUG’, false);

You shouldn’t be using debugging on a production site.

    Regards,

    Mark.
