• Resolved MBWD

I’ve exported site files from a standalone WP site so that I can import them into a subsite on a WP multisite. I’m using the native WP export/import tool.

After exporting the file (4.5 MB) I make the upload attempt to the destination subsite, but get a Wordfence warning about a potentially unsafe operation. I then disable Wordfence on the multisite (on the entire network, not just the subsite) and try again. Same warning. I clear server cache and try again. Same problem. I then disable Wordfence on the site that I am exporting FROM, and export all content again, then try to import the XML file onto the subsite once more. Again the same problem.

At this point Wordfence doesn’t exist on either site, yet is still throwing a warning and refusing to allow me to import the file. My upload limit size is 5 MB so I know that’s not the issue. I’ve done this operation successfully on this multisite earlier today with smaller XML files.

How is it possible for WF to be giving warnings and preventing operations when it doesn’t even exist on either site any longer?

  • Are you sure the warning is from Wordfence?

I don’t remember ever receiving a warning ‘from Wordfence’ like that but I have run into situations where my export XML file was too big for my importer. In those situations, I’ve just used an XML ‘file chunker’ to split the file. There are several XML splitters available online… halving the file is what usually worked for me.

Also, my Chrome browser seems to love to warn me about things so I wonder if maybe that is where the warning is really coming from.

Quite sure it’s Wordfence… there’s a big Wordfence logo in the top left corner of the warning page.

I had to install another plugin called Wordfence Assistant that goes through and deletes all references to WF in the database. This was necessary even though I had selected the option to have all WF info deleted from the db on uninstall. The import is now working.
