This is the third time I’ve found Wordfence deactivated on my site. I logged in to update some plugins and Wordfence was not active.

is there a log file that tells you when and why it was deactivated? Is there a safeguard that prevents the plugin from being deactivated?

    Thanks.

    Hi @paulcola,

When we see random deactivation of Wordfence in particular, it can be the host if they have a list of blacklisted plugins. I would hope that’s not the case as many customers choose Wordfence to protect their sites, but it could be worth checking in with their support to confirm or deny that line of inquiry.

In the mean time I could do some digging, so could you send a diagnostic report to wftest @ wordfence . com? You can find the link to do so at the top of the Wordfence Tools > Diagnostics page. Then click on “Send Report by Email”. Please add your forum username where indicated and respond here after you have sent it.

Note: For the fastest response time, please make sure and add any information or questions directly to this topic and not the email address above unless asked.

    Thanks,

    Peter.

Okay thanks so much. I’ve sent the report.

I’ll check with my host to find out if they have a list and if Wordfence is on the list of blacklisted plugins.

    I appreciate it!

Definitely not blacklisted. Inmotion shows Wordfence as a suggested plugin for site security. Let me know what you find out! Thanks.

    Hi @paulcola,

Thanks for getting back to me about the hosting situation, and that’s certainly a positive. Your diagnostic also doesn’t seem to show an unusual plugin status or any connectivity issues to our servers and back to your site.

Do you have Wordfence > All Options > Email Alert Preferences > Email me if Wordfence is deactivated enabled? If so, did you receive emails at the time Wordfence was deactivated or just discover it when you signed into your site? If not, please enable this and keep an eye on whether this situation arises again.

It would send you information formatted in this way:

A user with username “Username Here” deactivated Wordfence on your WordPress site.
    User IP: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX
    User hostname: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX
    User location: Town, Country

It does appear that the log information is only sent in email form and not logged elsewhere as WordPress itself doesn’t store this information. Wordfence would just show up under “Recently Active”, which will display plugins up to seven days after you turn them off.

    Thanks,

    Peter.

Okay thanks Peter. Yes, I have that option checked and never got an email.

If I’m not getting emails and you’re not keeping logs, is there anything else I can do to tell how it’s getting deactivated (at least the next time it happens)? There’s got to be a solution.

Hopefully it won’t happen again, but after 3 times in the last several years, I’m thinking it probably will happen again. I’ll keep an eye on it as much as possible.

    Might try this:

(EDIT: actually, maybe not. Not many installations and no reviews)

I wish Wordfence had the capability to monitor activates and deactivates of plugins.

    Thanks for your time!

    Hi @paulcola,

Are any other alert emails, or at least any emails triggered by your site being sent out at all currently? I am happy to provide some general troubleshooting tips if no emails are working. If it’s just the plugin deactivation emails not arriving I would also be more than happy to consult with our development team to see if we have heard of any edge-cases that might help you there.

I have seen emails triggered in the past where “localhost” is reported as disabling Wordfence, but this happens when a host is checking a site for conflicts and has to disable the plugin, but usually they re-enable it when they are done. There could occasionally be an issue where Wordfence was not restarted under these circumstances and perhaps your host would be aware of this possibility?

Just as a final note, always make sure your site has strong passwords set for all admin accounts (stored in a password manager if necessary) and enable 2FA & reCAPTCHA features. This just greatly reduces the possibility of plugins being disabled by a malicious source. I’m happy to also provide some site cleaning links from our help documentation if you just want to be sure a compromise hasn’t taken place.

    Thanks,

    Peter.

I receive Wordfence alerts all the time telling me what types of attacks my site has experienced, so I know I’m getting emails.

Thanks for your suggestions. I’ll keep a close eye on this. I need a plugin that watches the other plugins! ??

    Appreciate your time.
