Wordfence is causing a long delay in loading site

  • I have discovered where the problem lies though am unsure of the cause.

    My webserver error log has this..

    PHP Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in /var/www/html/blog.timxjr1300.ddns.net/wp-content/plugins/wordfence/vendor/wordfence/wf-waf/src/lib/parser/lexer.php on line 520

    I will disable WF for now but maybe that’s worth investigating?

    Hi @timxjr1300, thanks for getting in touch about this and I’m sorry to hear that.

    Can I confirm the versions of PHP, WordPress, and Wordfence you’re running? All three are available on Wordfence > Tools > Diagnostics if you’re unsure. There are a few mentions of this issue coming up pre-2020 but I’ve not seen it recently so that’s why I ask.

    In those cases, one was hosted on GoDaddy and it seemed to be linked to a slow response when trying to update Wordfence rules, although we should be able to look into it further once we know if everything is up-to-date.

    PHP 7.4.33

    WordPress 6.3.2

    Wordfence 7.10.4 (1695657196)

    I have to completely remove wordfence to get performance back.

    This is a SlowDaddy? issue for sure. It was one of THE slowest hosters I’ve ever encountered and they didn’t get that nickname for no reason. Also, your execution time should be bumped up to at least 180 anyway.
