WordFence Falcon, Gzip, and htaccess

    The last JetPack update caused my WP host server’s CPU cycles to skyrocket, which prompted me to tweak my WP configuration.

    I was using WP Super Cache with GZip/deflate enabled in the htaccess file.

    I was using WordFence, but not the Falcon Engine. After a bit of research, I decided to try it. I had to disable GZip in the htaccess file, because FireFox users started seeing gibberish. As far as I can tell, there was some kind of double-compression happening, but it only affected FireFox (ie. not Chrome).

    Without GZip, webpagetest.org indicates that image compression and static content aren’t as good as they could be.

    What am I missing?

    Are you still running WP Super Cache? If so, try disabling it. You don’t want 2 caching plugins running on a site.

    No, WP Super Cache was deactivated before the Falcon engine was activated.

    Did you ever make progress with your question? I’m confused about these things myself. I don’t see anything in the WordFence settings about compression, but I assume that I can’t also use GZip. I also get very low static content scores.

    I think the image compression is a separate issue. I’ve been using WP Smush. I understand that the WebPageTest score will remain low unless I upgrade and enable lossy jpg. compression.

    Wordfence does compress the pages that it serves, if the client supports it, but does not currently compress static content. I will mention this to the dev team, and we might already have a request open for it, to possibly add in a future release.

    You are correct that the image compression would be a separate issue — some plugins that compress your images might work well, but some may reduce quality, and it can vary by image, but it can be worth it if you find one that works well for your site.
