• Hi
Wordfence crashes on two of my sites when trying to disable Live Traffic. I switch off, click Save, then it freeezes – front end and back. I think the hosting must reset it – either that or the problem resolves after about 5-10 minutes.

Any suggestions? I need it off as it’s slowing the site down.
Many thanks for the excellent Wordfence plugin ??

“then it freeezes – front end and back”

Can you go into more detail? I have no idea what this means.

On further testing, it seems to just cause the website to become unresponsive for about 10 mins when you turn the Live Traffic feature off. The site is functional again after that and the Live Traffic feature is then Off.

Are you seeing timeouts or 500 internal server errors? 10 minutes is a long time – usually you’ll at least get a timeout or 500 error from a server within 300 seconds (5 minutes) if there’s an issue.

Having the same trouble today, switched off live traffic monitor and the website became unresponsive for roughly 20mins, backend and frontend.

This occurred immediately after unticking the “live traffic” box, clicking “save options” and then responding to the pop up message that said something like “a change had been made that requires a page reload”, can’t remember the exact wording. After clicking ok, the page just hung for around 15 mins, the pop up message also did not disappear from the screen.

On a different machine the front facing website failed to load in that time frame and had appeared to just hang.

After 15 mins of mild panic, this is a corporate website!! I clicked the cross in the corner of the popup to try and close the window. It did close and the backend came back to life to some degree (slowly).

I could then browse back to the WP dashboard and go in and out of posts in the backend, the front facing website also started working again, however, very very slowly between page loads, but it was back online.

Now trying to go back into any Wordfence menu in the backend just does not load the page, it just hangs, BUT, every other function in the backend is working, just the Wordfence menu and area hangs. It is almost like a wordfence process has not terminated or something??

Front facing site is still online, however is still really slow in page load times.

Hope this helps you in someway.

After writing all of this, the site is still slow to load and still cannot access any Wordfence menu in backend.

Not sure if this is relevant but also upgraded to latest Wordfence release that came out overnight before i tried to switch off the live traffic monitor.

OK, after another 10 mins or so and logging out, closing the browser and starting again, the Wordfence Security options page has now loaded and the site is lightning quick, both front and backends.

Weird why it happened and a bit panic inducing in a work environment, but now all seems to be back to normal!

I have another 6 websites all running the same setup and i am dreading the thought of switching off the live traffic monitor.

    Thanks

    Hi,

Are you switching off live traffic by saving the Wordfence options page? Or using the toggle at the top of Live Traffic view?

Switching it off via the Wordfence options page.

OK, can you check your web server error log? I think your database is having a problem when we write a chunk of data (the config data) and it’s probably throwing a packet-too-large or similar error and then slowing down for some reason. You might have to work with your hosting provider on this.
