    Hi,
very strange behaviour here: on just one of my five website running wordfence on WP 4.0 I’ve got the reported problem. No more able to edit widget (no drag and drop to sidebar, no dropdown sidebar menu), neither accessing to theme details page.

My theme is PageLines Framework 2.4.5 (the same for the five websites), no other plugin is activated and no logs helping to find the issue. Deactivating wordfence solves my problem.

    Any suggestion?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Hi

Sorry you are having issues. I wonder if you might be able to click the link on the options page that shows server info for a site that works and the one that doesn’t. Screenshot and post a link to both, if you can. I’m wondering what could be different between the two.

    Thanks!’

    Hi Tim,
    thanks for your feedback.

Here is the one from the “bad” website: https://www.nutfornuts.it/NOT_working_site.htm
Here is the one from the “good” website:
    https://www.nutfornuts.it/working_site.htm

As you can see, both websites are hosted by the same server and almost all informations are common to each other.

    Thanks again,
    Christian

So, you said you don’t have access to the logs? Does your hosting provider have them and isn’t letting them go? They should be able to provide you with your website specific error logs, especially if you tell them a time. Like say you activate the plugin, try to access the parts of the theme you need to, and then deactivate the plugin. I’d be interested to see what they said.

I’m leaning towards the theme not cooperating with what WordPress wants to do and something ought to show in the logs. The confusing part is, of course, whats different between the work and non-working sites.

What theme is it by the way?

I didn’t say that I do not have access to log, I only said “no logs helping to find the issue”. Log only show something like this:

[05-Sep-2014 22:29:18 UTC] PHP Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 36175872) (tried to allocate 786432 bytes) in /home/area101/public_html/wp-content/plugins/wordfence/lib/wfBrowscapCache.php on line 4100

However, notice that the above log concerns problems on previous dates.

If I do what you ask (“activate the plugin, try to access the parts of the theme you need to, and then deactivate the plugin”) no errors are shown.

My theme is PageLines Framework 2.4.5 (the same for working and not working websites)

    Bye,
    Christian

    Ok, that’s really helpful.

This means that the limit of memory that php can consume isn’t set high enough. What is confusing is that its exactly the same as your other server. Can we try increasing the memory limit in the php.ini file to 256M? Remember that apache probably has to be restarted after a change there. Also, there is a memory setting on the options page you probably want to change. I’m curios to see if that fixes it.

Out of curiosity, can you verify settings on the options page? Particularly interested if the images are being scanned for executables or not. Stuff like that.

    Thanks!

Tim, unfortunately I can’t increase memory limit, however, in my opinion, the log you’re referring to, is not directly attributable to the problem I described, because this issue came up after september 5th.

Don’t you rather think it could be something connected to Javascript? The problem basically involve the drag and drop option and drop-down menu function inside widget area. Moreover, if I set “Accessibility Mode” on widget page (under “Screen Options”) everything works flawlessly, because the page turns to static.

“Scan image files as if they were executable” it isn’t flagged.

    Regards,
    Christian

It might be but then again, everything should be the same across all the sites, right? Plus I would think the java errors would be logged in the error logs. makes it really hard to troubleshoot things without them andf I hate to enable debugging mode in wordpress because of the way it spits out errors on top of your live site. Still, we may have to resort to that to get to the bottom of this.

So the only time you have the memory error is on the 5th? and no time after, right? If so then its probably not the memory limit.

    Tim, do not get mad..

I’ve solved by simply cleaning my browser (chrome) cache.
So sorry to having bothered you before performing this simple action.

I take this opportunity to thank you so much for your wonderful (and moreover extremely useful) plugin, and also for your kind and polite support.

    Bye,
    Christian

    LOL

Thanks for letting me know. ??

    Thanks for making Wordfence great!
