Hi, just a question regarding the registration process of Wordfence free licence when you are building a website for a client.

Can I use my own email address when registering the licence on behalf of the client, or is there only one free licence allowed per email address? Obviously it is going to be more problematic to use my clients email address, as I then need them to forward the licence information to me when they receive it (they may delete it, they may not check their emails quickly etc).

If I need to use the client’s email address, then, by default, all notifications (eg critical problems found during scan) would be sent to the client’s email, unless I change the email address within the global options…. correct?

    Regards
    Nicola

  • Came here to say the same thing.

Installed the free version for a new client today and saw a different setup process. It looked like we had the premium version installed somehow, as it asked for a license key?

So I assumed maybe they had the premium version in the past and while it didn’t show under plugins perhaps it was still installed on the server and installing the free version within the WordPress dashboard maybe brought the files back and the site was confused.

I deleted the plugin and manually installed the free version from another site and saw the same license request?

    Is this new?

Or does this mean Wordfence is going premium only and the free version is being phased out?

Read Nicola’s message and agree, that would be difficult moving forward if I can’t use my own email address on behalf of clients I am managing.

Hi one3rdnerd, yes this is a new feature in 7.8.0 and changes the registration process for the free version. The free version is staying, but its not automatic registration any more. You can read about it on their blog https://www.wordfence.com/blog/2022/11/wordfence-7-8-0-announcement/?utm_medium=email&_hsmi=235770461&_hsenc=p2ANqtz-82isoCQh6rb-MdMmkONI0od1QdPbSWnNhs4KiPMvAQFxk5VJ1inEfDtYbxIGn92pDXOq1TD54uMRmvI7WMjXt-rdmlcw&utm_content=235770461&utm_source=hs_email

I agree, it’s going to be a pain for us in agencies, depending on what they come back with as their answer to my question.

Hi guys. Our support team does a great job and will weigh in here in the next few hours once they surface on the east coast. But it’s late, so I thought I’d reply to give you a quick response.

The email address your alerts are sent to is configured in the Wordfence plugin on the site. So you can separate where alerts are sent, vs where the API key is sent. You are most welcome to enter your own email (instead of your client’s email) when setting up the free version of Wordfence. You can get as many keys sent to your email as you’d like – there’s no limit and no plan to add any kind of limit to the number of free sites a single email address can configure.

Go ahead and install the key we email you, and then configure your client’s email address to receive the alerts, if that is what your client wants. I’d encourage you to consider setting up Wordfence Central so you can configure security across all your client sites in once place, and see security alerts across all sites on a single dashboard. That gives you a way to provide outsourced security management for your clients. Or if your client wants to manage their own security either via Wordfence Central or directly on their WP site, that’s cool too.

We are absolutely not getting rid of Wordfence Free and have no plan to. We have over 4 million websites using the free version of Wordfence and value every single one of our free customers. My intention as founder and creator of the product was to solve security for the entire WP ecosystem, not just a select few who could afford to pay. So we’re committed to providing passionate support for the free version for the long haul.

    Regards,

Mark Maunder – Wordfence Founder & CEO.

Thanks for your input here, much appreciated and keep up the good work!

@webcoast agreed, but it looks like it’s good news if we can create unlimited keys using one email address.

Great news for us in agencies! Thanks @mmaunder

We use headless CMS and on trying to obtain licenses we simply get the following error from the Wordfence website.

“The data we received from your Wordfence plugin installation is invalid. Please contact Wordfence support.”

Is there somewhere we can email for free licences?
Could this issue be due to the unavailability of an API endpoint perhaps?

    Thanks in advance!
