Word Press Creating Links

  • I have a travel blog created with Word Press. At some point (I don’t know when) Word Press started creating links to certain words or phrases in my content.

    For example, on my latest post I used the words “First Lieutenant”. Word Press made that phrase into a link to a website promoting Veteran benefits. This is extremely annoying to myself and to the people who read my blog. Readers think I am trying to sell them something.

    I know for certain that I was never asked if I wanted that linking to happen, so it must have been done with some upgrade of the WP application without my knowledge or permission.

    Does anyone know how I can stop them from doing this very dishonest link creating?

  • I don’t believe it’s WordPress that’s creating the links. When I read your latest post, the link is not there for me. I can see the phrase “First Lieutenant” in the post, but it isn’t hyperlinked to anything.

    I’ve seen this a couple times in the past when it was being caused by an unwanted browser “add on” or BHO (browser helper object) on a users PC.

    I think as a first step, you might want to try visiting your site from a different machine/device (or two) and see if the symptom persists across different devices. If not, then you may want to run a complete malware scan on the machine it’s happening on to see what you can find.

    Thanks for the quick response. After posting my question, I did some more research and you are right. This is not a Word Press issue at all. When I look at my page with another browser, the links do not appear. It is obviously some sort of malware issue, as you suggest.

    I will continue my research on how to get rid of the problem,.

    My bet would be on an unwanted browser add-on of some sort. Good luck to you!
