woocommerce/transactions when creating a dev site from existing site

new to wp here, picking up an existing job, client already has a live wp ecommerce site with transactions and woocommerce installed. I was going to create a dev version of the site to make edits but I am worried about the woocommerce and transactions. Is it safe to copy everything off the live ecommerce site to a dev environment without interfering with monetary transactions and such? I have MAMP but would also like to show client the edits online perhaps through a subdomain development site before deploying to the live site? Any resources, tips would be a great help and really appreciated. Thank you. I searched forums about moving sites/making dev sites but haven’t come across a post dealing with the transactions side.
