woocommerce Zoom 1.7.21 does not serve webp

all is working except Zoom 1.7.21 used by woocommerce to zoom over a single product image.
as you can see the thumbnail is webp but the full size image used by the zoom script using by plugins/woocommerce/assets/js/zoom/jquery.zoom.js serves the original image.
what is the best course of action? zoom over product image is part of woocommerce and they said to ask you.
i am thinking of even more rewrite rules or simply a php extension filter that simply regexp jpg to webp and go full webp everywhere, because who cares about the 5% of browsers which do not handle webp in 2023… but i may be wrong.
what is your take?
