WooCommerce wont activate since update to 2.1.7

    Since the update to wordpress (3.9) and the update to wooCommerce, I cant activate wooCommerce. all it does when I try to activate it it just throws a 500 internal server error

    The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

    anyone any ideas as our site is live and shop is down.
