All of the customizations I have done in my child theme for Make disappeared after I used the WooCommerce Dashboard wizard to “Personalize my store.” I was setting up WooCommerce and had just used the “Personalize My Store” option to upload a logo. (I should not have done that; it occurred to me immediately that my store was using the site theme, so that wasn’t necessary.) When I went to the Shop page, all the theme customizations were gone, not only on that page, but on all of the site. Reversing what I did has not fixed the problem. My site backup is two days old, so I would lose that much work if I had to revert. Please help!

    Thank you,
    Jim

    Hi @amrevnc

What sort of customizations did you have? Ex. Custom CSS?

I’m wondering if you might be able to check the backup files from 2 days ago and just pull in the custom CSS if that’s the case. If you’re comfortable with access your database via phpMyAdmin, you could also go through your wp-options table, compare that with your backup and update accordingly.

Thank you for your response. Good advice! I had started that process when my design consultant did it for me, recovering most of my changes (both my child theme settings under “Appearance,” and custom CSS).

My concern now is my fear of using WooCommerce. Fortunately my site is still under construction. But if this happens after the site goes live, it will be a disaster. Is there anything I can do to wall off the site customizations from Woo?

    Thank you,
    Jim

    Hi @amrevnc

I can certainly understand your trepidation! Typically, the custom CSS under “Appearance” should not be wiped out by an update, so I’m not certain why that happened this time.

The best advice moving forward is to always have a full backup that you create immediately before running any updates to WordPress, WooCommerce, or any plugins.

Another option is to use a separate plugin like this one to add your custom CSS.

Yeah, I was afraid of that: I worked in software long enough to recognize an “edge case” when I’m in one. ??

That’s what I had done, but some of my customizations are in various settings or directly in the PHP, so there’s no easy way to back up and restore them. Nonetheless, I saved my CSS and took a bunch of screen shots before reinstalling Woo. So far, so good.

    Thanks again,
    Jim
