WooCommerce Product Editor
-
Hello,
The past couple of weeks or so when in the product editor with variable products. We are having problems with loading and slowness. The editor seems ok until we select ‘Variations’ in the product data. The editor wigs out a bit and then we get a page unresponsive alert. Any one else having this issue since updating?

Hello @wrskate,
Thanks for contacting us. I’m happy to help you.
Can you please run a conflict test to see if something external is interfering with this?
The best way to do the conflict test is:
- Temporarily switch your theme to?Storefront?or?Twenty Twenty-Four
- Disable all plugins except for WooCommerce
- Repeat the action that is causing the problem
If you do not see the same problem after completing the conflict test, then you know the problem was with the plugins and/or theme you deactivated.
To figure out which plugin is causing the problem, reactivate your other plugins one by one, testing after each, until you find the one causing conflict.?You can find a more detailed explanation of?how to do a conflict test here.
Be sure you have a good backup in place of your full site and database. You can ask your host for backup functionality or consider using a service like Jetpack. If something goes wrong, you will be able to restore it.
I hope that helps! Let me know once you have done a conflict test!
Yes we have tried the conflict test but nothing seemed to be causing the slowness. We noticed it right after a recent update to WooCommerce. The slowness goes away in the beta product editor but nobody on our team likes the layout of the new product editor so we do not want to switch to the beta.
Hi @wrskate,
Can you share more details about this issue? Does it happen for all your variable products or just a few? Maybe ones with a high number of variations? If it happens to all your variable products, can you share more details about them? Were they created through the default WooCommerce way, no third-party plugins, APIs, migrations, etc?
Could you please try the edit page for any of the products that is causing problems and check with your browser’s console open to see if there any errors present? Please share a screenshot of what you see when you get the error!
In the meantime, I’d like to understand your site properly. Please share with us the necessary information below for us to investigate the issue further:
- System Status Report?which you can find via WooCommerce > Status > Get system report > Copy for support.
- Fatal error logs?(if any) under WooCommerce > Status > Logs.
You could copy and paste your reply here or paste it via https://gist.github.com/ and send the link here.
Once we have more information, we’ll be able to assist you further.
Thanks!
-OPIt is with all variable products whether there are 2 variations or 20. Our products are imported from our ERP Epicor through Modern Retail Middleware. We are able to create the parent/child relationship for the variable products in Epicor Eagle.
When editing a product there are no errors in the console just extremely slow and occasionally we get the page unresponsive notice.
Here is the other info you requested: https://gist.github.com/wrskate/56d65b64d1ca68bf935a4eb2d798479a
There are no fatal errors in the logs
Hey, @wrskate! Thank you for the information!
Our products are imported from our ERP Epicor through Modern Retail Middleware.
Can you please add a variable product via the default WooCommerce interface (Products > Add New) and check if the issue happens with this product too?
We noticed it right after a recent update to WooCommerce.
If the issue does persist with a regular Woo product, can you please try and roll back to a previous version to check if the issue persists?
You can find older versions to download here.
If you prefer, you can also use a plugin such as WP Rollback to help you with this process. You can find the plugin here.
Please let us know how it goes.
Have a wonderful day!
I added a product manually but still had the same response.
Rolling back to a previous version is is still slow but a little better. I rolled back to 8.9.0 and 8.8.4 to test. There is a slight delay looking at the all products view before going into the product editor as well.
Hi @wrskate,
As a next step, can you try clearing your transients, please? To do that, head over to WooCommerce → Status → Tools, and do the following:
- WooCommerce transients – Clear
- Expired transients – Clear
- Clear template cache – Clear
- Capabilities – Reset Capabilities
- Clear customer sessions -Clear
Next, please clear your browser and site cache. Let us know how it goes!
Thanks!
-OPGave that a shot, but still very slow.
Hi @wrskate
Thank you for reaching back, clarifying things further.
While investigating the site’s System Status Report (SSR) I noticed there is a template override for the product gallery.
As a next step, could you go ahead with activating a default theme, like TT3, and see if the issue persists, or otherwise? Preferably, on the staging site that Kinsta provides (the site’s hosting provider, per the SSR), where WooCommerce would remain as the only active plugin.
Moreover, I’m noticing there are no metrics shared in this thread so far. Let’s change that, with actual data. Could you share insights on the slowness via screenshots, so we can see what you are describing? Through what a plugin like Query Monitor reports, or an in-house tool, like APM I see here (not familiar with the latter though).
If you don’t already have a screenshot service installed, here are a few free options:

https://getcloudapp.com/
https://awesomescreenshot.com/
There is also a walkthrough guide here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/We look forward to your response. In the meantime, please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns.
At the beginning of this thread we attempted to disable all plugins and use a default theme. It did not resolve the issue.
Below is an example of something that is extremely slow and often results in the page unresponsive alert. I tried to reorder the variations by dragging one. In the other example I am just trying to add attributes to a simple product.

I ran the APM tool for 2 hours. Below are the results. The external spike at 10:26 was when I uploaded the mp4 files and the apm screenshot.

The video files seems not available. For better assistance, can you provide a video showing the issue on your end? For video, you may use https://loom.com or https://www.awesomescreenshot.com/. Please follow the instructions on that page and then paste the URL into this thread.

It sounds like some performance issues on the server side might be related to the database or PHP execution times.
Since you’ve already tried disabling plugins and switching themes, and the issue persists, we need to investigate further. Here are a few more steps we can take:
- Ensure your server has enough resources (CPU, Memory, etc.) to handle your WooCommerce store, especially if you have many products or variations. If necessary, consider upgrading your hosting plan.
- Over time, WooCommerce databases can become large and slow down your site. You might need to consider using a plugin like WP-Optimize to clean up and optimize your database.
- Enable WP_DEBUG mode. This will create a debug.log file in your WordPress installation root directory, which could provide more insights into what might be causing the slow loading times.
Additionally, I suggest you try the Index WP MySQL For Speed plugin. When you use this plugin, you’ll see a significant improvement in the loading performance of the admin panel and the front end.
Furthermore, our new product Editor is in beta, and support may be limited. So, there might be a few things that don’t work as expected. We recommend switching back to the classic product editor if you encounter any issues or limitations.
Please try these steps and let us know if there’s any improvement. If the issue persists, we might need to check your site closely.
If the issue was server side wouldn’t it persist in the beta editor?
I tested both urls in an incognito window and they both work fine for us.

Hello wrskate
Thank you for your reply.
After watching the videos you shared, it looks like the issue may not be on the server side but on the client side (browser and your local machine).
Could you tell me which browser and Operating System are you using?
Also, let me know which Extensions or Add-ons you have on your browser. You may also use Task Manager (on Windows) or Activity Manager (on Mac) to check the load on your machine while performing these activities.
Please share screenshots of your findings with me.
They would be helpful in further diagnosis.Looking forward to your response. ??
Best regards.
Hello! I am so frustrated that I didn’t check the browser first! We loaded it in firefox and there was no issue with speed. We were all using Chrome on the different computers. Thank you everyone for the assistance in troubleshooting.
