I have an issue where customers are going through to the checkout and not making a purchase. However, woocommerce is recognizing this as accepting payment, meaning the customers are getting notifications that their orders have been accepted. We are a marketplace with third-parties using our platform. These third party sellers are also getting notifications and some have shipped items believing that a payment has been made.

For added context, PayPal sent me the below email. However, I have checked the API settings and they seem to be working.

Please check your server that handles PayPal Instant Payment Notifications (IPN). Instant Payment Notifications sent to the following URL(s) are failing:

    https://ebonyx.co.uk/wc-api/WC_Gateway_Paypal/

If you do not recognize this URL, you may be using a service provider that is using IPN on your behalf. Please contact your service provider with the above information. If this problem continues, IPNs may be disabled for your account.

    Hi there!

Thanks for posting. From what I understand, customers are going through the checkout process, but they are not actually making a payment.

I have looked at your https://ebonyx.co.uk site, and added the first product I came across to the cart, and proceeded to checkout.

The checkout page then displays two options, PayPal, or Credit Card (Stripe). Could you explain a bit more about how the checkout process is being completed, without making a payment?

    Hi Kyle,

Yes, your assumption is exactly correct.

From adding the items to basket, the customer is then taken to the checkout. From the checkout, they can select PayPal or credit card to make payment. The issue arises when the customer selects PayPal and is then taken to the PayPal payment screen, where the order amount is displayed. If the customer stays on that page but does not click the ‘purchase’ button, nothing should happen. However, that is not what is happening. Instead, woocommerce thinks that the customer has clicked the purchase button when no payment has been made, and so a new order shows in our dashboard when the order was never actually placed.

Thank you for getting back to us with your findings. That is absolutely not expected behavior, as the PayPal checkout process should be completed before an order is marked as complete within WooCommerce.

In order to further investigate this, can you please send an email to [email protected] with the following details:

    1. Your System Status Report
    2. A brief summarization of the behavior you’re seeing on the site
    3. A link to this forum topic so that we know what’s already tested

In order to ensure there’s no loss of information spread out between different support interactions, I’m going to go ahead and mark this ticket as resolved so that we can continue investigating there.

Please feel free to open a new topic if you have any other questions.
