    Hi WP community,

I am having problems with the Woocommerce url structure for a website. With Woocommerce, a category page is reachable through multiple urls, which is bad for SEO.

Here is an example of 2 urls for the same category page:
    [ redundant link removed ]

My menu structure, internal links and backlinks all use the first url of the example. Now I see that Google is indexing pages with the second url example (/category/camellia/).

How can I best solve this? I am afraid that not all link value will be taken in the ranking and possibly I will get a penalty for duplicated content. Can I change something in Woocommerce, or should I set 301 redirects for example.

Is there anyone who has also had this problem and has the right solution?

  • Hi @jacobholwerda

I understand that your menu structure, internal links and backlinks all use this url: https://tuinplantenonline.nl/bomen-en-planten/camellia/

If Google is indexing pages with this url https://tuinplantenonline.nl/categorie/camellia/ , can you please see what is set in the permalinks at Settings > Permalinks?

If the desired permalink is already there, then please flush your permalinks. You can do so by just resaving your current structure. Doing so will rebuild your .htaccess file and hopefully, clear redirect issues if any. You can find more info on this here: https://woocommerce.com/document/permalinks/

You’ll also want to make sure that the account endpoints are correctly set under WooCommerce > Settings > Advanced > Page Setup. Here’s the guide for your reference: https://woocommerce.com/document/woocommerce-endpoints-2-1/

    Hi Margaret,

Thanks for your reply and the links to additional info. I’ve checked my permalinks, product category base is set to: categorie.

If I remove the text “categorie” I think it will add the default text “product-category” in the url.

Add the text “bomen-en-planten” in the product categrory base field is also not an option, because we have also categories that do not belong to /bomen-en-planten/, for example /fruitbomen/appelbomen/.

Any other tips that can help?

    Hi there @jacobholwerda

If category permalinks aren’t set in that way, could you let us know how you were able to achieve the structure below?

    /bomen-en-planten/camellia/

Is that done by using a plugin?

In that case, you can simply add a regex 301 redirect using a plugin like Redirection.

    I hope this helps!
