Woocommerce Checkout doesn’t work for Logged out Users

    Hi team,

    we are facing a problem with woocommerce checkout. When a non-registered user goes to the cart page and tries clicking on the ‘Proceed to checkout’ button, it doesn’t work. We even tried opening the checkout page with the direct link, but it redirects us to the cart page only.

    We have tried so many troubleshooting steps but nothing seems to work. Could you please help us resolve this error at the earliest?

    Sorry to hear about what happened, the reason could be a plugin conflict, as a first step, please perform the following actions on your site:

    • Temporarily switch your theme to Storefront
    • Disable all plugins except for WooCommerce
    • Repeat the action that is causing the problem

    If you’re not seeing the same problem after completing the conflict test, then you know the problem was with the plugins and/or theme you deactivated. To figure out which plugin is causing the problem, reactivate your other plugins one by one, testing after each, until you find the one causing conflict. You can find a more detailed explanation on how to do a conflict test here.

    Hi Igor,

    Thanks for your reply. We tried everything you mentioned step by step but to no avail. Even after switching the theme to storefront, the checkout button didn’t work. We disabled all of the plugins except woocommerce with the storefront theme activated, still, checkout didn’t work. Even if we try opening the checkout page directly, by typing in the URL, the page doesn’t open up and gets redirected to the Cart page. And again, this issue only happens in the case of logged out users, for admin or any other users who are logged in, the checkout button and the page works perfectly.

    We even broke our site in this conflict test process, so had to restore the previous backup.

    Also, we did one additional thing, that is, we created a temporary clone of our website on the updraftplus server with the intention of debugging this problem further. But to our surprise, even without making any changes to the themes or plugins, the checkout button and page was working there already. (for both logged in and logged out users)

    We are really confused and don’t know what can be done further to understand the root cause of this problem.

    Would really appreciate your help in this.

    Could you please help us with this at the earliest?

    Hi,

    Just to make sure, please confirm if the option Allow customers to place orders without an account under WooCommerce → Settings → Accounts & Privacy is checked.

    You can also try switching to a different payment method for troubleshooting, or sending us Stripe logs, by following steps 10 and 11 of the Setup and Configuration section of this guide: https://woocommerce.com/document/stripe/#setup-and-configuration

    However, since the problem was not replicated on an alternative server, this issue is most likely related to some server level settings, so I’d recommend reaching out to your hosting service support as well.

    Hi Berg,

    Thanks for your reply.

    No, the option ‘Allow customers to place orders without an account’ was not checked because we don’t want guest checkouts on our site. But even when we select this option and try checking out, it doesn’t work.

    On the clone website, however it does, even with this option left unchecked.

    We did try switching to the COD payment option while our troubleshooting process but nothing changed.

    Regarding the server related settings, we did try reaching out to our hosting support but they also couldn’t help us. Could you please elaborate on this suggestion a bit? We’d like to explore more of our options here.

    I agree this is a very weird problem, nonetheless, we have to solve it. Is there any other thing we can try apart from all this?

    If none of these solve your problem then please share a copy of your site’s System Status. You can find it via WooCommerce > Status. Select “Get system report” and then “Copy for support”. Once you’ve done that, paste it here in your response.

    Just to be sure, I want to reiterate that we are referring to this feature, Allow customers to log into an existing account during checkout on your WooCommerce Account and Privacy settings, the customers on your site will need to log in if they are on checkout page and not logged in.

    Please refer to this documentation and let us know if enabling this setting will solve the issue in your case.

    Thanks for sharing the screenshot. It is showing that the option Allow customers to place orders without an account is unchecked. In this situation it is normal for the ‘Proceed to checkout’ button not to work for logged out users. The Allow customers to log into an existing account during checkout option is selected alright.

    Earlier you had mentioned that even when you check that option still it doesn’t work:

    We have tried different browsers, devices and even networks, but to no avail.

    Although we do receive such comments once in a while that the process works for them, however, we haven’t been able to pinpoint when does that happen.

    It looks like I’m able to proceed to the checkout page only after allowing or denying cookies. It will just reload the Cart page if I leave the cookies notification there.
