We had a big problem updating WC core from 8.8.2 to 8.9.1 on our test site. There was no update link available as there usually is on the Dashboard nor in the Plugins page. So we had to update manually. We did first deactivate the other WC plugins as required before deactivating WC core. However, the plugin WooCommerce Donation Or Tip On Cart [ which is not part of the WC ‘stable’ of plugins] caused the site to crash. It would be helpful to include it in the list of plugins to deactivate before deactivating WC core even though it’s not part of the ‘official’ set of WC plugins.
However, we did eventually successfully install WC 8.9.1. However, most of the other WC plugins were now also deactivated and couldn’t be re-activated as their activate buttons were dimmed out and not available. We had to therefore roll back to WC 8.8.2 – and this immediately reactivated all the other WC plugins.
Is there a problem with installing 8.9.1 on a test site? Will be get a similar problem updating on our live site?
    Many thanks
    Robert Sterry

  • Hello ?? @rsterry48,

    Thanks for reaching out.

I understand that you encountered issues while updating the WC core.

The issue you faced seems to be related to plugin compatibility. The WooCommerce Donation Or Tip On Cart plugin is not a part of our official WooCommerce plugin suite and we cannot guarantee its compatibility with all versions of WooCommerce updates.

However, I understand your suggestion to include non-official plugins in the deactivation list as well. I’m afraid we are unable to include such a list as different stores use different plugins which are developed by different developers, making it difficult to test all other plugins each and every merchant uses in their stores.

As a nest step, it is always good practice to first test updates on a staging site. This way, you can identify any potential issues without affecting your live site. If the same issue occurs, it’s likely due to a compatibility issue with the Donation Or Tip On Cart plugin or another plugin on your site.

You might consider reaching out to the developer of the Donation Or Tip On Cart plugin to check if they have a newer version that is compatible with WC 8.9.1.

I hope this helps clear any confusions.

No problem updating WC core from 8.8.2 to 8.9.1 on our test site this time. Previous problem appears to have disappeared.

    Thanks for your help
