I have been using WooCommerce on three different websites for years, and have sales tax set up to charge for sales that ship in Florida only.

Today, (all of a sudden), I have a new order from a customer from South Carolina, who was charged Florida State sales tax on their order! They don’t have a Florida address, or FL zip code entered, yet they are being charged Florida State sales tax.

I can provide screen shots of my Woo Tax settings, which are set up correctly, but I don’t see where we can attach images? I haven’t changed those tax settings since March, when our rate changed.

Why is the Woo Commerce plug in charging sales tax for a South Carolina order, when it is only set up to charge for orders in Florida?

PS – I am NOT using the Woo Commerce plug in extension, just have tax set up under the main Woo plug in.

    Thanks for any info/help.

    Hi @photomj,

Can you provide screenshots of your tax settings so that we can have a look? I recommend https://snipboard.io for easily sharing screenshots – please follow the instructions on that page, then paste the URL in this chat. It works with Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge browsers.

    Thanks!

    Hi Mirko –

I uploaded screen shots to Google Docs: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1nJUG0OLF8UjLhY3MvvFVteugTGbpip-T?usp=sharing

    Thanks.

    Hi @photomj,

    Thank you for the screenshot.

Could you please place a test order with the customer’s address to see if you can replicate the issue on your end?

If you can, I suspect the issue might be caused by a conflict on your site. I’d recommend following these steps to perform a conflict test.

If that doesn’t help, please share your site’s system status report to help us understand your set-up and help further.

You can find it via WooCommerce > Status. Select “Get system report” and then “Copy for support”. Once you’ve done that, you can paste it into your reply.

We did try to replicate the issue and the error didn’t happen.

But, I now have TWO customers who were charged FL State Sales Tax, when they live out of state.

That being said, I’ve had a couple orders come thru that didn’t charge the sales tax.

Unfortunately I don’t have the time to test for conflicts.

    Hi @photomj,

Thanks for getting back to us.

This kind of problem is usually caused by a conflict on your site with another plugin. So whenever you have some time the best way to determine this is to:

    • Temporarily switch your theme to Storefront
    • Disable all plugins except for WooCommerce
    • Repeat the test orders using different States other than Florida
    • If you’re not seeing the same problem after completing the conflict test, then you know the problem was with the plugins and/or theme you deactivated.

To figure out which plugin is causing the problem, reactivate your other plugins one by one, testing after each, until you find the one causing conflict.

Please make sure you have a backup in place of your site and database. You could also consider using a service like Jetpack. If something goes wrong, it’s nice to know that you can restore your site to the previous state.

I’d also suggest installing a plugin called Health Check & Troubleshooting. This is a plugin developed by the WordPress community and it allows you to disable plugins without affecting your current site visitors.

Let us know how it goes!

    Hi Mirko –

Why is it that we can’t ever get actual “help”, when we have a problem with your plug in?

The solution/answer is always to go deactivate all plug ins to see what the problem is.

This issue isn’t happening on every order, it has only happened on a few, so the problem seems pretty clear, in that it is your plug in that isn’t working correctly all of the time.

I don’t have the time to go deactivate all the plug ins to try and figure this out for you guys. I already know the answer….it isn’t going to be another plugin’s issue….the issue is with your plug in. If it was an issue with another plug in, then it would be happening all the time. It doesn’t take much time to figure that out.

I now have another issue with your plug in, that I will go start a different topic about, which I’m sure I will get the same “answer” from you guys.

I seriously wish that plug in authors would actually offer “support” for their plug ins, when they don’t work correctly.

    Hi @photomj,

I understand your point but the only way we have to narrow this down is by running a full conflict testing deactivating all other plugins and keep placing test orders. We can then find out if the behavior will occur again.

Assuming that it’s due only to the core WooCommerce plugin may lead to a false belief. Whenever it’s proved that the issue relies on core WooCommerce we’ll be happy to report this to our developers and open a bug report in Github.

    Thanks!

Right, some “other” plugin is causing the Woo plugin to add sales tax to orders it shouldn’t.

What you are asking me to do is waste my time, so you don’t have to do any work on your end.

The problem is with your plugin and you should be the one to troubleshoot it, or report it to your developers, since it isn’t working correctly.

    Hi there,

    Thanks for your reply.

In the last couple of days I’ve been generating test orders with South Carolina and Florida addresses using the same tax settings as shown in your screenshot, but I’m not able to replicate the issue.

To be considered that I only have the core WooCommerce plugin active on the Storefront default theme. I’ll keep trying in the following days and if anything comes up that is not the default behavior I’ll post it here.

    Thanks.

    Hi there,

We’ve not heard back from you in a while so I’ll go ahead and mark this thread as resolved.

We did not find unexpected behavior with core WooCommerce upon processing test orders on our multiple test sites. Hopefully, you were able to find a way forward with the issue.

Please feel free to create a new thread on the forum if you need further help.

    Thanks.
